"Like something a drag queen would wear"?

Don't often get invited to fancy functions but am going to a large corporate ball in the autumn where the dress code is black tie. After having speaking to friends who have been before, the code for women is "long and sparkly".

I saw this dress in TK maxx today - tried it, fits beautifully (i'm 5'4", size 14-16, short dumpy legs and long boy) was very pleased with myself until got home and husband's verdict was firstly it's too old for you (i'm 44) and "it looks like something a drag queen would wear." The dress is a stretch jersey fabric which is very comfortable, is a good length on me and the cape bit is chiffony and floaty.

Verdict??

Oh and I wouldn't intend walking around all night with my leg sticking out.

I love it. Strangle the DH and wear it with a flourish.

I'm joking about the strangling. A little bit.

I can't get the link to open, but it sounds good other than your DH's reaction. Does he have a good fashion antennae (so you should listen to him) or not (so you should ignore him)?

I'm not sure of his fashion antennae. He preferred the dress I had last year for the same do which was sleeveless and was OK, but I don't like the tops of my arms and spent the whole time with a wrap on. My 10 year old approves very much as it's "nice and sparkly" but I'm not sure she's the best fashion consultant.

Also a bit offended that the description says "plus size"!!!

It's very see through 😳

I think it's lovely apart from the fact it's see through!

Do you have to take your husband with you? He sounds awful.
Some drag queens look amazing anyway. Smile In some of the clubs in Ibiza, the drag queens are breathtakingly glamorous.

Drag queens may look amazing, but I don't think it is the look I would go for at a corporate ball. I have reservations about the dress - it looks a bit odd and frumpy to me. Also, if you don't like the tops of your arms, it shows your arms and you can't wear any sort of cover up over that odd cape.

I would take it back, but then, I haven't seen you in it - you may totally rock it.

Not at all drag queen, but I can't see it favouring you much. Although it could look different on you.

The lines are very square which might not be the most flattering. Is the cape perhaps detachable?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/06/2016 16:29

Not sure about drag queen, but I don't like it. Sorry. It doesn't look as if it would be terribly flattering either.

This maybe?

It makes the model look short and dumpy. It doesn't seem well designed or cut. It looks like its just been cut down. I honestly wouldn't unless you're 6ft and built like a twig.

it is a bit old for you...very glamorous great aunt imo, I would not look twice at that and I am 50.

I've come back to this thread, because I've realised what the dress puts me in mind of - not drag queen, but cruise ship attire. I don't think it is stylish or flattering, sorry.

No, that's just not nice. It's see through, and very square, and it does look designed to hide larger figures, in a not at all flattering style.

It might be slightly improved by removing the cape but not really.

Sorry but it looks like something someone who owns the Queen Vic would wear in Eastenders.

You're only 44. Get something else!

I think it's horrid (sorry) but not necessarily "something a drag queen would wear" unless she was a very unstylish, frumpy drag queen.

Agree with pp; I've seen drag queens I would 100% aspire to look like, but anyway, this dress is just not nice at all (I don't think) and I don't think it would flatter anyone you, unless it's one of those dresses which really transforms when you see it in person.

Thanks for the picture - I agree you can do better!

What's your budget, and what colour do you like to wear?

It looks like the cruise ship itself.....

Happy hunting!

I must say, it looks very unflattering on the model - the shape is so boxy she looks like a rectangle. I agree it looks like it's designed to hide a larger figure, hence the "plus size" in the description. If you're only a 14-16 you can do much better than that.

If you have a decent waistline, you'd be much better off with a dress that cinches in at the waist a bit.

Not all drag queeny though agree it's a bit old.

But If you like and you're comfortable then wear it.

Really don't like that sorry. I think your DH is right that it is too old for you. It's also very square and I can't imagine anyone that it would be flattering on. Like the one Remus linked to earlier.

Report
LadyAntonella · 26/06/2016 17:08

Remus's suggestion is really nice.

LunaLoveg00d · 26/06/2016 17:12

Taking it back tomorrow then!

That house of fraser one is very nice too. I don't really have to stick to a budget, but I begrudge spending £££ on something which will only be worn once, possibly twice. Seems very wasteful. Last year's one was from Quiz and was very similar to this one. The problem is that it's the wrong time of year to be looking for this sort of frock!
