Navy skirts, what colour tights and shoes?

Hello, newbie here with a very dull first post.

I'm in the process of trying to smarten up my work wardrobe as I'm hopefully up for a promotion. I am looking at pencil skirts/fitted dresses. I don't wear black at all as I look awful in it so wear a lot of navy.

In the past I've gone for knee boots/jersey dresses so there has only ever been a sliver of hosiery visible. However, now I want to look a bit sleeker, I am trying to work out what I can wear on my legs. I usually wear flats rather than heels but want a pair of 'emergency' heels too. I have seen a pair of navy heels as well as some navy brogues in the Clarks sale and was just about to buy when it struck me that I'm not sure about tights.

Summer I'm be ok in nude tights but in Autumn I'd want something opaque. Can I wear black tights with a navy skirt and shoes? I'm not funky enough to make coloured tights look like anything other than silly and I'm not sure they are 'corporate' enough anyway.

Am I just better off going for black shoes and tights? My legs are more along the sturdy pit pony model rather than sleek race horse (as is the rest of me). I'm not very stylish and in 40 years have never managed to look anything other than slightly messy so trying to look like Mrs put together is a bit of a challenge!

Following, I always wear nude tights with navy dresses even in winter but would like to see if I have other options

Stick to nude tights for work. Whilst navy and black can look very chic together, black tights with navy shoes would look odd.

What about 30 denier opaque navy tights?

What about grey tights?

Further to my post above, you can wear black tights with a navy skirt, but match the colour of your shoes to your tights. It will elongate your legs and look more polished.

I often wear navy tights with a navy pencil skirt. Posting to see what other posters say to see if this is acceptable or a fashion faux pas.

Thank you all.
I've ordered the heels in black and navy so can have a play around (dh reminded me that last time I tried brogues I looked like a trucker so I put them back!).
Is it just me that finds nude tights cold?

I agree with Frank. Charcoal grey with the same colour or darker shoes.

Cross posted with the grey suggestions. So navy skirt/charcoal tights/black shoes? Would that work?

I wear black tights and grey ankle boots but my navy dresses are more smart/casual

Black tights and red shoes for a kick of colour?

Sigh! Can't wait for the autumn and getting back to tights! I hate the summer

My friend, a fashion buyer, says 'gunmetal coloured tights with navy'.

Gunmetal or navy for me

I wear navy opaques in the winter. I just can't do navy and black together, despite being told its now considered chic. I might try grey tho as another alternative.

I go with either nude or grey, but mostly nude .
If wearing nude tights, another option for shoes is silver.

My boss wears navy tights with navy shoes and looks lovely. I am old school and was taught black & navy look cheap. Which heels did you get OP? After reading this thread I clicked on the ckarks sale and accidentally ordered x2 pairs of Kendras (navy & sand).

Anyone have any links for grey or gunmetal that aren't thermal?!

Recently wore navy dress and shoes for a smart event and was stumped what coloured tights - ended up with nude ones which I hate. I have brown skin and they make them look a bit shimmery and like those nasty ice skating/dance American tan tights Confused

RFab, went for the Chorus Music. I preferred the Kendras but I have awful feet with really high arches so wanted some kind of strap to help them stay on.
I have some navy tights at the back of the drawer so will try those first I think.

Chocs music look lovely, I reckon they'd be great with navy or grey.

Have you any nice navy pencil skirts you can link to? I am only find minis.

No skirts yet. I've had a look around and can't find much but am hopeful there may be some post sales.

Navy and black used to be a no no, but that all changed a few years ago! I would either do navy tights and navy shoes or black tights and black shoes. A lower denier than 100 opaques would look better if black I think (40 or 60). I would not do black tights and navy shoes. That would just look odd.

I do skin coloured glossy tights and navy shoes, in fact atm I don't have any black work shoes as they wore out and I haven't found any I like.

If you can be slightly less formal, teal or burgundy look lovely with navy.

Yes, actually, I did buy some tan shoes in a sale recently and thought I could wear those as well but I haven't done so yet.
