Please Help- how do I wear lipstick

Stupid question I know but I have never worn it before. I have brought some lipstick (it's a Kate moss one from Rimmel) and I'm going out for the first time since finishing my long term relationship so I'm just trying to update my look that I've had for 10 years

I have NEVER worn lipstick before so thought I'd try some. I've put it on and it doesn't look right, do I need a lip liner? How do I get on to match? Any tips on putting it on?

I know these are probably very basic questions but I haven't got a clue.

Yes get yourself a neutral pinky brown lip liner and that will do for everything except v pale or bright red lips. Make sure you like the texture and type of lipstick you've bought. I can't abide anything glossy and like a matte or cream finish. You might like a light glossy type though just be prepared to reapply a zillion times. Apply lip liner (if lips dry then work in a tiny dab of lip salve first, then first coat of lipstick (don't bother with a brush), press lips gently on tissue, then apply second coat, then tissue again. Then you are good to go!

I would want lipstick if I was alone on a desert island, such is my love of the stuff.

Thanks for the reply sparkle. It is a bright red lipstick, I ordered it online so just ordered one I liked the look of. What liner would you recommend for a red one?

It looks nice!

I do think you need a bit of liner. I bought a Rimmel one yesterday and really like it:

The red looks lovely, use a red lipliner to stop the lipstick bleeding and use the lipliner all over the lips so you don't get left with just a line, as the lipstick will wear off before the lipliner. Also put a slightly lighter concealer all over your lips (very lightly) first. Have you been to a cosmetic counter to ask advice, or try one on? I work on a cosmetic counter and I would definitely recommend going..try one on and don't buy it straight away, go around shopping etc and keep looking in the mirrors as it takes a while to adjust to a new colour.

Is that the 111? It's a lovely colour.

Lip liner and the tricks mentioned by PPs will help but you mainly need to practice a lot. Getting red lipstick on straight isn't easy! Also, it's good to just wear it round the house while you get a feel for having it on 'cause it can feel a bit odd at first.

Thanks everyone! I had a look at the Rimmel one mama, think I'll go buy that tomorrow!

Does it matter if it's not the exact same shade red pearl. And when you said use it all over do you mean colour my lips with the liner, then the lipstick on top? No I haven't been a cosmetics counter, always feel like a bit of an idiot because I don't know anything about makeup and feel like they're going laugh at me Blush I think I'll nip town tomorrow and visit a counter and try and get some tips.

Thanks for your help Flowers

Rimmel is great budget lip liner and agree apply all over lips to get your red to stay. MAC good for high-end liner. That colour looks fab on you OP but you are selling your top lip short! Line that baby fully - you have a fabulous pout.

I think going straight to red might be a bit of a shock, you may feel more comfortable at first wearing something more neutral until you get used to seeing yourself with lipstick on and the feel of it.

If you've got a Space NK near you, have a try of the Lipstick Queen range: they adjust to your colouring to form a colour that suits you. I find the Blue one (Hello Sailor), which goes plummy, isn't as amazing as the green one (Frog Prince). It goes pink (different shades on different people -I did a test on about 5 friends and we each had very different shades from bright fuschia to pale peach, and each suited each person). Long lasting too (sometimes wake up with pink lips having slicked some on in early evening).

It's not cheap, but I think ?Barry M does a dupe for the green one.

The Body Shop does a transparent lipliner here that works with any colour and doesn't have the risk, if you're new at this (or on the bus, or drunk or etc) of making you look like you've drawn your lips on wrong (either too big or too small), and stops bleeding.

PS from the picture,, you have picked a red that suits your skin and colouring - that's 99% of the trick to red. Go out and have fun!

Thanks cross really appreciate it!! My cousin came round last night and tried it on her lips and it looked so much more defined then on me, she said I have weird lips Hmm

I think I'll go for the liner you've linked to, I'm sure I saw a voucher for 40% off at Body Shop so even better.

Thanks carrie. There isn't a space NK near me, I live in a really small crappy town, but I go to a bigger city quite often so I'll see if there's one there. I want one for the day time as well as I think it'll make me feel more out together so I'll definitely try them out.

Thanks everyone
