Does anyone else get bothered by their asymmetrical face?

My face is wonky, and not just a little! I can look completely different in different photos. My eyes and eyebrows are at different levels and my jaw line is not straight. I obviously can't do anything about it bar facial surgery which is not an option obviously. Does anyone else have similar? I would give anything to have regular bone structure!

Mine's wonky too - result of Bell's Palsy. Everyone says they can't see it but when I'm tired one of my eyes is practically closed! I'm sure nobody notices yours either OP - I think our faces just have character! Smile

I'm the same OP - one eye higher than the other, one permanently raised eyebrow, one ear higher than the other, very uneven lips, crooked teeth. I look perfectly normal though - promise! I don't care to be honest. I think that facial quirks can look very attractive and very few people's faces are completely asymmetrical. I guarantee that not one other person has ever noticed that your face is asymmetrical. We are so much harder on ourselves than anyone else would be.

I have completely unsymmetrical nostrils and they fuck me off a lot. I really like symmetrical things especially in regards to pairs of things.

I have one eyebrow higher than the other, which can make choosing suitable glasses a real pain!

I remember on that Terry Nutkin kids nature programme (1980s) it said nobody had a symmetrical face. Then showed what faces would look like with one half reflected to make up the other - very odd indeed. No idea why it stayed with me but it must have struck me as interesting!

Oh yes!! The left side of my face all seems to be more squashed than the right. Left eyebrow and eye lower and eyelid droopier. Left eye lazy. Left ear lower. Left side of mouth curves up more towards ear and jaw line seems higher than right hand side. The thing is, i dont notice it in the mirror but it is really obvious in photos! And i think its got worse in the past few months. I dont remember noticing it (other than ear and lazy eye) before maybe 2/3 months ago.

Yes! Me too. I've always wondered why this is - the cognitive science/psychology behind it?

I noticed something odd when I was getting my passport photo taken (which always come out hideous of course, for everyone, I'm sure even supermodels look like convicts in their passport photos). When I was posing for the photo, getting in position etc, and it's essentially like looking in a mirror or taking a selfie, I looked fine on the screen. But as soon as the image was captured and I saw the static image, my mouth looks completely wonky!

I am a curious person so I really wish I knew why this is. Any cognitive scientists here that can explain?

Yes bayleaves! I can take a selfie on my phone and i look fine on the screen whilst taking the photo and then when i click on the image itself i look wonky! Why cant i see it when just a mirror or phone camera?

Yes, I'm aware of my facial asymmetry but I know that no one else would even notice it. I've certainly never looked at someone and thought 'oh look, the left side of their mouth is a few mm lower than the right'. Humans are such vain creatures that we pay far more attention to our own looks than anyone else's! Thankfully Grin

It's hardly noticeable (even to me) if I smile though so I try and look cheery-ish in photos. My bitchy day to day face though, wonky as fuck!

Thank you, hopefully it is much more obvious to me than anyone else. cannot see it on anyone else particularly so it is a somewhat relief to know I am not the only one. Bayleaves and RudeElf, it is the photos that prompted me to write this post! My lips are also dead wonky, and I definitely have one raised eyebrow. I think I'll try and forget about it and just bear in mind I have an 'interesting' face, as we all do!

Natalie if that's your sales patter you'll very quickly be bankrupt Grin

Op, I have a wonky face too but as pp have said , symmetrical faces look odd. Hold a mirror against your nose and take a photo, you'll see!

I feel the same op, I hate having photos taken but I've realised if I turn my face slightly they look slightly better, everyone else says they can't notice it.

That's because you see yourself in the mirror all the time, but not as often in photos. If your parting is, say, on the right, you see it on your right in the mirror. Whereas in a photo you see it as others see you, with your parting on the viewer's left. So you look 'alien' to yourself.

FWIW I have various asymmetries to my face, but have never been too bothered about them. Disliked, but accepting. But when I lost my facial hair, it took me years to come to terms with it.

I have a crooked, witchy nose, a scar in one eyebrow and a big red birthmark so my face is far from symmetrical! It doesn't bother me one little bit.

My mouth kind of droops on one side unless I concentrate. That's also the side with a few big scars and where I get all my spots. Very frustrating.
