What to wear to an evening reception London wedding?

So we're off to The big smoke for a wedding next weekend and I don't know what to wear. I'm a farmer so don't do dressing up at the best of times and for weddings my default is a very traditional pale coloured flowery phase eight/monsoon type thing. I think I'll feel wrong wearing that outfit - the do doesn't start til 9pm. I

Can I wear a little black dress? Black trousers? I'd need a top to go with them. I do have a silver/dark grey body con type dress but am struggling to accessorise it.

Would a cocktail dress strike the right note?

I'm mid thirties with mousy curly hair, 5ft 5, hourglass size 10. Chunky thighs though so too short doesn't work.

Budget is upper high street. Don't mind buying statement shoes & bag if I love them. Dress would have to go with shoes o already have.

Please help, I've been going round in circles with this!

It depends on the crowd. Of the last two London weddings I went to, one was black tie and the other was pretty casual.

Hmmm. It's an old school friend who I don't see very often to know her crowd! There's not many of her school friends going ergo I'd imagine a fairly London based set. My instinct is to go rather smart for weddings hence why I was thinking cocktail type dress.

I think you can't go wrong with your cocktail dress idea. You clearly anticipate feeling not quite right in a Phase 8 floral affair, so listen to your instinct and leave that one in the closet. I agree, pastel florals at night ain't the best look...

I'd wear (and have worn to this sort of thing) a cocktail dress and heels with some fairly glam accessories and a good blow dry. I imagine lots of people would be in black too.

Ah ha. That blue dress is the sort of thing I had in mind. Thank you.

Where in London (which venue / area) are they holding the reception? London is tribal with its dress codes!

(Although that Areias dress is nice)

How about a jumpsuit, alternatively? Some really beautiful silk tailored ones around.

Can you tell us anything about the venue?

I like the jumpsuit idea... It'll be smart but edgy, might work well with the 'London set' Wink.

Maybe navy teamed with silver shoes and a funky clutch. Want to add lots of pics, will have a go... Went to Asos for ideas...

I would keep it really simple and understated so you feel comfortable on the day.
A tuxedo would be great or a little back dress that was fitted, not all floaty and fussy.
All accessories kept to a minimum with one piece of garish bling.

The venue is The Crypt at Ely Place. Will get on the laptop and have a look at some of the suggestions now that

Ooh it's lovely there!

It's only London. I feel like people dress up less for stuff here (but then I can't remember the last time I left my immediate post code). I reckon the jumpsuit idea is best - BUT whatever makes you feel comfortable and relaxed is the best of all.

I like the look of the jumpsuit. I might order and see what I look like with it on!

So I have the beginnings of a basket at ASOS - any other suggestions before I checkout?!

This is the dress option I already have. It's like a dark silver/grey. Struggling to know if it needs a jacket

Please excuse the mess in the background!

I like the dress, you look fantastic in it! Might be a bit formal with that jacket though!

the dress you have looks great . you are about the same size as me, and the most of my weight is on my thighs . I have a wedding in summer and was looking at this www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/womens-dresses/smart-day-dresses/ww067-grn/womens-beetle-green-crossover-ruched-dress with these shoeswww.boden.co.uk/en-gb/womens-workwear-range/shoes-boots/ar736/womens-ashley-heel like in the picture with the black dress

I would treat an evening wedding as a cocktail dress affair. I like the dress you posted, but I do think you dont need the jacket as an evening guest (although it is lovely). I would team the outfit with some statement/sparkly jewelery rather than the jacket. a necklace that ties in your yellow clutch would be ideal
