help me find the perfect black leather tote bag

it's not for me, it's a present for a big birthday. it should be a great bag for every day, i think quite big, good quality leather and something quite simple and classy, nothing frilly or OTT. what do you think?

I like the second bag; would be happy to receive it! Perhaps not the most useful advice, given that I found mine two years ago in TK Maxx, but I have a woven polyester bag made by a company called Abbacino that is very nearly as good as the Bottega Veneta leather tote, just not leather. I have seen Japanese copies of it in woven leather in the Middle East, but even they were over £400.

I can highly recommend Yoshi! Their quality is fab and their customer service unbeatable. No, I don't work for them but almost every bag I own is made by them and the colours are gorgeous - I have black and tan totes as well as others in teal, brown and lilac :) I think the prices are amazing too. Hope you find something!

Madewell do perfect totes. I have this in tan but I think they do it in black too

Open totes with no zip are a PITA; stuff falls out. they're not as practical or good for carrying lots of stuff as they seem. Would go for one with a fastening of some kind.

i was hoping to avoid the shopstyle search because there are SO many hits for 'black tote' but i did eventually go down that rabbit hole. unfortunately i ended up concluding that coccinelle totes are the most beautiful, so now im trying to figure out if theres any world in which i should stretch to one or if i should buy the birthday girl a bottle of bubble bath and save my money to buy myself one instead
