I need to make a wrap coat smaller. I'd say it's around a size 14 and I need to make it a 10. It's big on the sleeves too. How much should I expect to pay for this and what shall I tell the tailor to do apart from "please make it smaller"?!

If you go to a reputable tailor they'll know what to do. I sometimes buy things in the sales that may be a size or two up and then get it tailored to fit me exactly. But it's not cheap though. I've had a leather jacket done and that cost almost £100. I imagine a coat will be similar. Also depends where you live, my tailor is in central London and does all the alteration requests for Harrods and Harvey Nichols so that's probably why it's expensive. But if it's an expensive coat I wouldn't risk it being cut up and reassembled badly by a cheaper tailor.

I had a wool coat which I loved, but proportions were slightly off for me so I asked a local tailor to shorten the length, sleeves and make the shoulders narrower. Really pleased with end result which cost me £40.

Thanks both - took it to a place I've been to before in Covent Garden. She altered some vintage Levi 501s for me to make them skinnier and even make the waist bigger which she did well so entrusted her with this. She's charging £30 for taking it in. Fingers crossed!
