if you are size 18/20, what's you're everyday look?

I have another thread asking for advice about updating my look but was just wondering if any of you who are size 18/20 could tell me what your daily outfit looks like?
I tend to live in jeans due to living rurally and dog walking, mucking out chooks etc. Can't do heels due to back problem anyway!

So what's your normal ' look'?

Shift dress for work, or pencil skirt and top. At home- leggings and a jumper, daytime- skirt and jumper, or jeans.

40s style tea dresses which nip in at the waist, coats which are also fitted at the waist and full skirted, full skirts and fitted tops - do you see a pattern forming here?! I'm a size 18/20 too and I've found that weightier fabrics suit me better as they skim and conceal better than flimsy ones. Fitted waists give me a more defined shape (I'm big of nork and smaller of waist anyway). I can't wear heels - I too am medically exempt! - so wear flat long or ankle boots or brogues. I also have a massive collection of coloured opaque tights - mustard opaques and oxblood brogues is my current favourite combination Smile

Black leggings, knee high tan boots, and a baggy jumper. In the summer, I wear flowy maxi skirt and baggy sleeveless vests

Where do you all shop?

Report
kansasmum · 20/02/2016 20:05

I shop all over the place but due to my size it tends to be a bit harder. I buy at Seasalt, Boden, Fat Face, John Lewis, Primark, Next ( their jeans fit me well) and Sainsburys actually- they have some great stuff!
As I lose weight I'm looking forward to having wider variety of shops and more choice!!

I go for jeans (I have blue, brown, burgundy), I usually layer a long vest with a casual/relaxed top in the same colour over, or a cardigan or v-neck jumper.
Over this I wear a blazer/relaxed wrap/throw and big scarf.

I try to stick to warm colours - Browns, reds, charcoal, navy etc

I keep it very simple these days. Days off, jeans, sweater, low heeled ankle boots, parka or biker jacket. In the summer I replace the sweater with shirts over a camisole and the boots with flats, ballet shoes or trainers. I stick to navy, biscuit, white and burgundy mostly. I hardly ever buy clothes with patterns on.

Work, smart trousers, boat necked top or round necked top, long cardigan. Colours Navy, grey, white and black.

Add necklaces/scarves etc.

I wear skinny dark denims with t-shirt and cashmere cardigan or blazer and large statement scarf with mid heel ankle boots or loafers for work as well as weekends. I have a few denim dresses and pencil skirts for days I need to look smarter.

Watching with interest... I tend to live in jeans and baggy tops these days so desperately need ideas! Can you link to or show pics of the type of things you wear?

Yy to Sainsbury's - their dresses can be lovely, and they often have 25% off promotions (there's one on at the moment actually). Clark's for shoes. Tights from eBay - it's so hard to find comfy tights when you're over a size 18. I love Lindy Bop dresses - the less OTT ones, worn without flouncy petticoats for daytime. La Redoute is good, especially for coats. My favourite shop though is Monsoon, which will no doubt upset many on here as MN considers it frumpy - my beautiful and v stylish 18yo DD loves it too so it can't be that bad!

Ophelia. Which brand of tights do you buy please? I end up buying tights for tall people and after an hour I look like Norah Batty!. Clothes from Mango Violetta look nice for Summer.

I am a similar size, big norks and belly with an overhang that looks awful in trousers.
I need to smarten up for a new job instead of tunics, leggings and boots.
I've just accepted my weight gain has gone to far and started slimming world (again), but ideas to smarten up would help. I'm more a Sainsburys type budget!!

Lurking for tips, I'm short 5'3 & size 18/20, hate buying clothes & never know what suits.

I like Monsoon too. I'm also tall and their clothes are long enough for me.

Even as a size 18 my boobs are too big for most highstreet shops so I still swear by Pepperberry for tops. I'm high waisted so empire line tunic style tops (though you have to be careful with the style if you don't want to look pregnant) or shirts which I can wear untucked to hide the 'apron' but still look smart over straight legged trousers and block heels (either boots or mary janes). My work essential is a tailored jacket, it hides no end of woes. M&S works if I can't afford something better. A good one will last for years so I try to invest if I can.

I can't wear monsoon because their waistlines are too low for me. I love the colours there though. My skintone is very sallow (read blue/grey) so I do well in jewel colours which they excel at.

Sandgrown I buy my tights from this eBay seller - loads of colours and v comfy.

I bought a lovely dress in the Monsoon sale last week actually, was reduced from £89 to £13! They still have lots of stuff left on the 70% off rails in all my local stores - it's a bit pricey for me usually, but I stock up when the sales are on as they reduce stuff by so much.

Ophelia how generous are the sizes? As a very tall hippy women, size 20 tights are hell.

I also shop at all the places mentioned. Monsoon sale is good but I find fit can be very varied. Not tries Lindy bop yet but I will.

Following too; mainly for tights! I'm a tall, hippy size 20 too...

I buy the XXL and they're OK on me, maybe a teenytiny bit of ankle wrinkleage occasionally but I am only 5ft 5. If you were an inch or two taller I shouldn't think it'd be a problem. There are lots of other eBay sellers who sell tights in larger sizes - I guess it's just about shopping around until you find the ones that suit you best. They're all v affordable so it's worth trying a few - finding tights in sizes I'm able to wear has been revolutionary for me, getting me out of my ubiquitous leggings and tunic uniform, so it's definitely worth it. One thing to bear in mind though is tights (esp lower deniers) don't always deal with chub rub - I have a selection of cut-down leggings to wear on top of them which does the job nicely Smile

M&S, East, white stuff, Monsoon.

Tend to wear dresses with opaques and loathe summer Grin

I hate summer clothes-wise too. What do other 18-20 sized people do instead of short skirts, bare arms/legs?

Report
LaurieFairyCake · 22/02/2016 12:10

I wear leggings year round. As tights in winter ( in long boots) and with tunics or above knee dresses in summer (with flattish sandals like fit flops).

But they must be thick leggings. I don't want to see lumpy bits in them.

I summer I wear dresses, knee length and always with short or, when cooler 3/4 sleeves.

Also 7/8 trousers with long, bottom covering tops or fine cotton sweaters. I find Boden a pretty good source for all these - always buy with20% off.

It depends on the mood!

Today I was at work and I'm wearing grey wide leg jersey trousers, a purple silk top, long jersey cardi and some short boots.

My general work-wear includes dresses and skirts-and-top.

At home it might be jeans with a long vest top and a cardi or jumper. Or the same dresses. And I also have some full circle skirts that I wear with top and cropped cardi, and I have some 50s-style dresses.

I've started making my own clothes and really love it - my next project is going to be an asymmetric wrap skirt. And I am OBSESSED with vest tops, I wear them almost all the time.
