Hair Colouring Conundrum

So I've had grey hari for at least the last 15 years, and I'm only 37..
I've mostly just died it myself with home hair dyes, back to the same old brown colour my hair is.. Recently though I got into having mr hair coloured at the salon, I went lighter, and now have highlighted brown hair.. Its nice, you know, but not amazing considering it costs about 70 on every appointment. So I'm thinking of going back to dying it myself, but don;t want any horrors when I do. Specifically as its highlighhted now, I'm worried about what will happen!
I'm going to the hair dresser this evening to go "back to black (well dark brown)" and she suggested when I spoke to her that she will do permenant on the roots and then temp on the rest..
What do you think this will be like to maintain.. I am wanting to just have consistent hair that is not a million colours and costs me a fortune.
As much as I love that relaxation in the chair whilst the dye goes off I just can't afford it any more..

Any ideas, do you think the perenant on roots and temp on rest will sit well, and how would that cope when I come to home colour in 5/6 weeks time..

This is the technically correct way to colour hair permanent on the roots, temp on the ends ( not that a clients really needs to know that tbh)

Temporary colour over porous hair (ie previously coloured) will stick like a permanent. Permanent is stronger (to cover grey) so therefore could possibly be more damaging over your current highlights.

It will bear no effect on you colouring at home- although hairdressers do it this way to think you can't achieve the same look at home.

Of course a professional application and the combination of two different applications will always be best.

Seems a waste your highlights are you looking to get rid forever?

Thanks, the girl I have is really good so I will be sad to stop having the highlights.. they are good, and it has been a gradual lightening process, I am very happy with them now just don't think I can afford the maintenance.. so want they best way to continue on a budget..
Maybe I'll just go for a lighter brown, and see how that goes....

Exactly. Foils. and a tint,
I think like a T bar, but not! ;)

Just do the tint every few appts or do it yourself, have the highlights done twice a year.

A hairdressing training salon will be about half the cost of a high street salon. Check if you have a college or hairdressing academy nearby.

I work mobile/freelance but I'm certainly not a cheaper option.
