Going shopping tomorrow for new make up. If you are 40ish what eyeshadow do you use?

I am 40 & looking tired. I am going to treat myself to some new make up & tomorrow I'd like to get an eyeshadow but have no idea what to go for as never really bothered with it.

I have dark brown quite small eyes. I have olive sallowy skin which means I have dark areas under & above my eyes. It makes me look tired so I want to brighten this up but keep it natural looking.

What eyeshadow would be best; powder or cream & what colours?

I've had a quick look online but am a bit overwhelmed with the vast amount of choice. I do like Clinique as I can react to things but seem to get on well with this make.

I'm 40 something ish. I use my Urban Decay Naked palette everyday. Maybe the Basics one with more matt shades in it?

I have a nice bronze powder eyeshadow from Liz Earle that I bought in Boots.

Powder is generally better eyelids which may not be as taut as they used to be.

If you're in London then Inglot is fab. Kiko also good. Also use a lot of Mac and Urban Decay.

Benefit Lemon Aid is a good under eye concealer.

42 - Naked palette (I'm completely different to you colouring-wise, so #2 probably wouldn't suit you).

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to John Lewis as I have some vouchers. I thought powder might be too drying for my dryish skin but actually my eyelids seem quite oily so whenever I have tried to use eyeshadow it disappears within about an hour!

I'm nearly 51 and completely an Urban Decay fangirl! Loads of nice shades, though I tend to avoid the sparkly ones for day-wear. I'd get them to advise you in your local department store. All the Naked palettes have warm and cool shades though the reviews do vary.

This review is quite good on olive skins 10ambeauty.com/urban-decay-naked-naked-2-and-naked-3-swatches-and-suggestions/

Have fun shopping!

41 here with small insipid brown eyes (best described as milky coffee). Naked 2 basic pallet for day to day, smokey for wknds and (rare nights out). Online tutorials helped greatly to see where colours/shades should be applied for different looks. Could always try Boots or Super drug versions before investing.

I don't really go for colours but the bobbi Brown long wear (pot or stick) is a good stayer. Use a brush to blend it.

If you're eyeshadow is disappearing get some Urban Decay eyeshadow primer. Makes a difference.

I'm 42 and have deep-set eyes. Pale, shimmery colors make my eyes look a lot bigger and more open. I have dry skin and prefer powdery eye shadow. I only use dark color on the lashline, powder e/s applied wet with a tiny brush. Shimmery taupes, golds, pale apricots and flesh tones. I have a fab loose pigment one from Inglot for eveningwear.

I second Benefit Lemon Aid. I use it alone on my eyelids as a 'wake me up' look or as a primer for shadow.

Estee Lauder long wear pots are good, metallic but not overly so and they stay put.

50's. Just bought this . have been using it a couple of weeks now and very happy. I put it on around 7am and it's still looking great when I take It off at bedtime.

I have used and loved, the Liz Earle eye-shadow, but sadly they were all discontinued last spring. No plans to replace them, at least according to the reply I received to my email asking what was going on.Sad

I got the urban decay naked for Xmas. I really like wearing eyeshadow now! I think it's the #1 palette. Love it. I'm 41 green eyes. It's really really versatile so money well spent if you have vouchers. Mine came with some free primer sachets too.

Bobbi Brown is a good counter to try for sensible advice and a natural look.

My fave eyeshadows are Stila, Body Shop and Bourjois. I like "grown up" shimmery ones, i.e. very subtle shimmer but not totally matt. They are good for lifting and brightening your eyes, especially if you try light shades. For a long time I thought eye shadow meant it was supposed to be dark, but I've found lighter beige or champagne-type colours can look great. I'd normally also suggest muted pink and lilac, but with olive skin you might want to go more bronze/gold. Definitely try the counters and look for a nice assistant, ideally 40-something themselves, to help you try things out.

Urban Decay Naked palettes. I have two and don't wear any other kind of eyeshadow

Sounds like Urban Decay are a favourite. I would never have thought of trying it as assumed it was too young & trendy for me! I will have a look at them tomorrow.

Yup, Urban Decay here too. I have Naked Palettes 1 and 3. Lovely wearable neutrals.

I'm 49 (but not for long ) and I rarely wear eyeshadow.
I have a couple of Sleek palettes so I just decide what colour I fancy.

I've got a Barbara Daly primer and a Bare Minerals 5 in 1 primer (that will act as a long lasting eyeshadow) .
If I want a 'clean' looking lid with no veiney bits, these last all day.

Yy to Urban Decay Naked. Am mid-forties and similar colouring to you. Have no 1 and the Smoky eyes palette, although the latter was a recent gift which I haven't yet tried. I use the original one all the time.
