Grey hair - are highlights a good solution?

I have dark brown hair and I've been using either semi permanent dyes or using root touch up to hide my greys. Im mainly grey around the temples with a few scattered about but getting worse. I seem to need to colour more and more often and my hair is just dull and boring.

I'm wondering if highlights would 'lift' things a bit while also blending in greys more rather than them standing out against my current dark colour. My concern is that I'll end up looking like a badger and that highlights will be expensive to maintain. Has anyone gone down this road with success?
