What to wear in INDIA in APRIL help for me and 14YODD!

I need inspiration for my holiday wardrobe for me and dd1, who is 14. (my younger dd is 11 and very small and will still happily wear traditional summer dresses.)

dd1 is 14 and more tricky. she would usually wear short skirts and crop tops which are an obvious no no!! at home sh'e currently surgically attached to nikes, hoody and black jeans (not my choice!!)

she has agreed to wear those floaty traveller trousers- but i'm wondering if they would be too hot. I'm also thinking gyspy /ethnic style maxi skirt with t shirts. however, this is also what i'm planning to wear so i know she won't want to look like a 'mini-me' Lol! she SAYS she won't do long skirts but if the trousers are too hot, what then?

any suggestions?

Give us an idea of what weather will be like there then, dry heat or humid? Temperatures?

Just looked on a website.

Can't link for some reason but you can google.

Yes, long skirts, harem pants (trousers) and shirts or tops that cover the arms or at least 3/4 length.

Shalwar kameez (sp?) etc if you don't want to buy when you're there head to an Indian part of your area (with sari shops etc) and pick up some stuff there. Could also try a market with ethnic clothing, loose etc....

thanks superfly. she has agreed to the harem pants, but i'd never dream of wearing long trousers in Greece in august, for example, so was trying to find acceptable skirt options for dd. it'll be an average of 30 degrees but don't know how the humidity affects things.

Which part of India? Delhi is best to be conservative but you'll attract attention even if you are fully covered much more relaxed in Goa.....

zara, are sleeveless sundresses ok for my 11yo? (not spaghetti straps) if she takes a shawl for walking around? (if i told you she was 9/10yo you'd believe me but she's nearly 12 so very little girlish still)

She should be fine but do be prepared for lots of attention we were stopped several times by locals as they wanted to take our photos heard this is pretty common. Enjoy your trip. I love India.

You definitely need to cover up both for cultural reasons and also the Mosquitos in the evenings! I was in India for 4 months and wore long, floaty skirts, linen trousers, very lightweight waterfall cardis, basically loose, lightweight clothes. A shalwar kameez is brilliant in the hot weather as it's loose and lightweight. Can be bought v cheaply in India too. Also a lightweight scarf is a good cover up but again, they're on sale everywhere in India. Obviously you can wear what you want on the beaches in Goa, they're pretty westernised. Have fun!

Bright colours.

I have never felt as frumpy as I did in India, wearing 'business attire'.

My cousins lived in South India (near ootie) and they wore well relaxed stuff but covered. Indian variations.

Goa from when I went there is way more relaxed, shorts go etc... Also I found you don't get as much male attention as everyone knows it's touristy.

Natural fabrics too, linen, Cotton etc if possible. If you want to order Google natura Spain (they deliver and have a website) a great ethnic inspired site but also with trendy items. Super popular in Spain. Last time I was in a hot and sometimes humid city (Barcelona) all the locals wore a variation on harem trousers because they're cool in the heat.

I have been to Delhi (before Himalayas for hiking) and I liked wearing in July (very hot), I liked wearing long loose travel trousers (sweaty Betty beach trousers from memory) , and a loose long sleeved shirt. Even with all that on I had a big scarf / sarong as a scarf over the top, as there was a lot of staring and I never kept as close dh!

Tbh I would put have them both trousers, not a skirt with knees out.

You will end up buying suitable clothes when you get there. Thin cotton trousers and sarongs etc. But a long sleeve thin cotton shirt is a must when the sun goes down to stop the mozzie bites. As soon as the sun starts to set spray yourself with deet spray. And take berrocca everyday starting a week before you leave because the mozzie a hate the vit b and c in it. A pashmina is always useful but you can buy them over there.

Re shoes in India I wore a pair of Greek leather sandals constantly for 3 weeks and carried my expensive walking shoes in my backpack only wearing them for the journeys there and back.

Something like this? Loose black or grey harem pants (so not a world away from her black skinnies) oversize t-shirt with sleeves that come down to the elbows and converse or ballet pumps or sandals

Can't comment on India, but from a hot place, where covering up is required: woven cotton and Linen, rather than Jersey cotton (so more like a shirt than a tee-shirt), light colours, loose clothing.
By 10 here, girls are covering up. I'd say up to maybe 6 gets away with summer dresses.

I live in Linen trousers, and loose shirts - if I can find them, without buttons. I did a big uniqlo shop last summer, but all the winter stuff is in ATM.

Dresses are harder, sleeves, not too low at the front, long enough and not fitting is harder to find, I think.

Yes to a loose woven scarf. My Womdee , bought after a recommendation on MN are often admired.

Enjoy.
