What can I wear to be comfortable all day?

I'm trying to look after myself a bit more this year. I want some new clothes bit don't really know where to start. I'm 41, 5 foot 1 and a size 8. I tend to buy skinny jeans/trousers but I find them so uncomfortable. So I end up going back to my ancient pair of bootcut jeans, but even then as soon as I'm home it's straight into trackie bottoms. I'm feeling like such a slob. Ideally I'd like to wear tailored trousers but they're not very fashionable and I would feel very dowdy and middle aged. So what can I wear to look good but comfortable. Would really love some advice. Thanks.

I find skinny jeans uncomfortable too but have a few pairs of relaxed skinnies from m&s Blush and they're really comfortable to wear all day. I wear with brogues or Chelsea boots. Also like straight cut jeans - I buy Next petite ones (I'm similar size and shape to you OP)

Thank you mumsnit. Straight cut jeans-what boots? And are relaxed skinnies more comfortable? I hate anything right around my knees.

I have a few pairs of this kind of thing link.
Soft jersey or cotton, and printed.
I wear with plain loose vest/cardi or fitted shirt and chunky/statement necklace. Flats/wedge trainers or ankle boots with a small heel.
They don't look particularly smart here but I generally get good feedback.

Ooh they look so comfy I could live in those. Never would have thought to smarten them up like you suggested. I'll try those thanks so much.

Relaxed skinny jeans are definitely more comfortable around the knee for me - maybe try some different brands? I think straight jeans look good with a heel or heeled boot!

I just bought some heeled ankle boots so I'll wear them while shopping! Also bought straight leg tweed trousers which frankly my granny wouldn't wear Blush so I'll take those back!

Are you into running? My cousin has to be very smart for work but wears her Nike running leggings and tops with trainers all weekend on the off chance that someone will give her childcare to go for a run. Sometimes I think she has no intention of running 😀.

I am currently sorting a very fetching pink dressing gown which is 10 years old, fraying knickers and purple slipper socks that come up to mid calf. Would that do? GrinGrin

I can't possibly run-those running leggings are far too uncomfortable. Otherwise I would of course Grin
Twlbach-you're my spiritual equal! I may stay in my Christmas pjs all dayI frequently do

Ooh that looks perfect! Comfortable but 'put together'. I've got some great ideas to work on now so thanks for your help.

Yoga or dance trousers also worth a try. I've got a couple of nice pairs.

If you're having trouble with all sorts of jeans, and they all end up feeling to tight, then try the next size up and in a fabric with plenty of stretch.

Sizing is meaningless these days, so trying different ones to those you think 'ought' to fit can make all the difference.

Comfy dresses with thick woolen tights. Much more comfortable than jeans

Your really slim so you could wear nice jumper dresses with tights and knee high or ankle boots. Loose or baggy ones.

Dresses are the way to go, I live in dresses.

In the winter I wear slim-fit jumper dresses (mini length) with wool tights and boots.

If you don't like skinny jeans wear cigarette pants - Maxmara, Jaeger, LK Bennett, Cos do good ones.

Uniqlo do some very inexpensive trouser-look leggings.

I love dresses too but hate tights

Dresses with leggings? Plain dark leggings with dresses and boots look like tights most the time anyway

I'd love to wear dresses but then never know what coat to wear ??? I tend to wear hip length coats as im short. Im bloody useless at this!
Jeans never fit me no matter how expensive. They either don't go over my thighs or they gape at the back. Although I do have a nice pair I got from next children's department Blush as the waist is adjustable. They just bother my knees Confused

I'm now living in GAP sexy boyfriend jeans but I had to go down 2 sizes (normally 29 but wear these as 27). Very comfortable and not too baggy especially if you size down. They sit really well on the hip with or without a belt and touch the ankle I usually wear them with one small turn up and converse of ankle boots in the winter. I wear them with everything from shirts, thin jumpers, sweatshirts (MiH do some really nice light weight sweatshirts) to blazers.
I get more compliments in these than in skinnies and I'm really comfortable.
I love them and I was a die hard skinny jeans person
