What kind of hairbrush do I need for my thick wavy hair?

Like the title says I have lots of thick, slightly wavy hair and I think I need to improve my arsenal to try to tame it.

I have a big paddle brush at the moment and that is it!

I just used the tool on the Mason Pearson site and they don't have a suitable brush for my hair type!

What do you want to do with the brush? Is it for styling when wet or brushing when dry? If when wet, just a round, barrel thing will do - the bigger the barrel, the looser the waves/curls. But, I wouldn't brush it at all when dry - just loosen with fingers.

Mine is shoulder length but when wet I just let it dry naturally and brush in the morning with mason&Pearson. I quite like wavy, natural look though.

Try a tangle teaser ... ace for thick hair wet or dry.

I just use a small round hoghair brush.

It was pre-tangle-teaser days when my hair was actually long, but I found that so many different brushes simply got stuck or broke or just barely touched the surface. I owuld try a tangle teaser if I had long hair now, though.

Oooh confusing advice - brush when wet and not when dry, or brush when dry but not when wet! To be honest I think I need to do both, it seems to have an amazing ability to get knotted and straggly looking.

I will look into a tangle teaser.

I just bought a 'wet brush'

Best brush ever. Doesn't pull out loads of hair and can be used on wet hair. They do a paddle brush version too.

I have the same style hair by the sounds of it and since I ditched my paddle brush it has been 100 times more manageable. I now use a tangle teaser on dry hair that needs a brush (so in the morning on non wash day) and a a wide tooth comb on wet hair. I can't believe the difference it has made!

I have thick hair and my Mason Pearson brush is the best brush I have. I don't use it on wet hair though.

It's a Junior model - no idea if this is still made as mine is about 30 years old! Mum mum got it for m when I was a girl, but I use it daily, and I often use it on dd1 who also has thick hair (alas dd2 does not). It's still going strong and easy to clean.

I use a big paddle. Tbh, I think Mason and Pearson are shit for thick hair. They don't get through mine at all, just make the top layer frizzy.

I have very thick (thick strands as well as lots of it) wavy hair. It has a tendency to be frizzy too. Tangles tweezers don't go through it, nor do mason and Pearson. I agree with whoever said never brush it wet, I only dry brush mine.

My dd uses a paddle brush like the one above but square.
It is a bit wavy and she used to have to use a tangle teaser until I bought her one on the off chance.
Mine is very curly, so hardly touch mine.
I can highly recommend it, her hair looks beautiful and so thick and tidy rather than the birds nest she had.

I use the tangle teaser when wet and have a big paddle brush when dry. Neither actually tame my hair only the babyliss big hair makes it look decent.

Someone gave me a Mason and Pearson brush like that when I was younger and it did nothing for my thick hair, just irritated the surface.

I have a cheap brush from Superdrug with wide teeth which does the job perfectly, whether my hair is wet or dry.

Are you me?! I was thinking of writing a very similar post - also looked on Mason Pearson and they suggested nothing was particularly suitable.
Mine is thick as in lots of it, but the strands themselves are fine and tangly. It has a very slight wave, and if I dry brush it it goes big and 'hazy' looking. If I didn't brush it I'd never get the tangles out!

I'm nearly 39, how can I still not do my hair?!

I bought a tangle teezer, not blown away - left my hair staticky although a bit smoother once the static died down.

My mum used to use a denman style on me when I was small, maybe she was onto something

Babyliss Big Hair is my saviour too when I have time to do it.

Thick curly hair, used to be frizzy, stopped brushing and the frizz has gone! Just sort of run my fingers through it when putting my conditioner on.

I realised brushing was no good for my wavy thick hair so switched to a wide toothed comb. It's really done wonders for my hair.

The one brush I occasionally use is a huge paddle brush with a cusioned base. Same one as in the pic. Unfortunately I can't find it anywhere to buy online but a similar one would be just as good.

Really recommend a micro fibre hair turban too. Stick your hair in it for half an hour before drying and it'll halve the time it takes, so less frizz and damage.

I have thick wavy hair and the tangle teaser is the only brush I've ever liked, although it tends to flatten down the waves. It doesn't make my hair frizz.

One of my dd's has thick curly hair,I agree the mason and Pearson brush doesn't seem to get through the hair, denman vent style brush is good, I find that brushing it when wet and then leaving it to dry naturally it goes into gorgeous curls but if I brush it dry it turns into frizz! On a school day I brush it and put it in a French plait to keep it out of the way but that's more a look for a primary school girl not a grown up!

Another one who agrees with mud. I've not brushed my hair for nearly 40 years - no frizz.
