Make up overhaul

In the past year the effort I put in to my make up has really dwindled, I still do my eyebrows everyday but rarely wear any other eye make up or anything on my skin. I've decided enough is enough though and want to get back into my old routine, I also have a close family members wedding coming up that I need to do my own make up for (normally pay to get it done professionally for wedding). Having a look through my make up bag tonight I've realised I need quite a new few things so thought I would take the opportunity to have a bit of a make up overhaul, so I thought I would enlist the help of MN. I have a £30 Debenhams voucher I can use and about £35 worth of boots points. The things I need are:

1)Foundation/BB cream. I want to treat myself and go to a make up counter preferably, any recommendations for where I should be looking? I have heard Estee Lauder are good but any other suggestions?
2)Highlighter. Never worn it and have no idea what I'm looking for but several friends have told me I should be using it.
3)A rose gold eye shadow and a brown eye shadow, I think I have found an eye liner I want but any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I have a mascara I am happy to use but again if anyone has a brilliant suggestion I am happy to have a look at it.
4) A lipstick that will last all day, and any suggestions of a shade that will look nice with rose gold eye make up.

I think that's everything but generally just any advice on making myself look half decent would be greatly appreciated Grin.

Sorry just realised the OP is not clear. I am happy to spend more than the money I have in vouchers/points.

Ysl touche éclat foundation is brilliant. It gives you gorgeous natural looking skin.

Bobbi brown eyeshadow are my favourite and they do a lovely rose gold shade.

I wouldn't bother with highlighter.

Estée Lauder lipsticks are usually pretty long lasting and they have a lovely range of shades.

I use Lancôme hypnose mascara but to be honest if you have one you like already I would just use that.

Maybe you should pick a counter and go for a makeover?

Yeah I want to pick a counter and go for a make over as I'm going to Liverpool shopping in a few weeks and thought it would be easier to get it all at once, but which counter Grin? From what you have said maybe Estée Lauder?

I think with the look and colours you suggest that you should go to a bobbi brown counter... I find all their products very reliable. Your goal: find the right look. Some items you can buy more cheaply once you have colours sorted. Avoid light reflecting particles ... These show up horribly in photos (eg ysl under eye concealer)

Ooh there's a question! I would probably pick Bobbi Brown but Estée Lauder would also do a really lovely job.

You might also want to look at one of the Urban Decay palettes-they get recommended on here all the time and I'm saving my boots points for one. Lots of really pretty shades which are long lasting and go with each other, and would probably contain a suitable rose gold shade and a brown.

Thoroughly recommend Bobbi Brown. I had a makeover at one of their counters in JL prior to my Dd's wedding. The assistant was brilliant, no pushy sales, really patient in explaining best way to apply, and great products. Recommend their foundation and lipsticks. Really lasted well.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. The assistant wrote down all the products she used in case I wanted to buy them at later date- I bought most there and then as was so impressed!!

Purple has good suggestions. Mac products also good. I don't rate Estee Lauder for a full look even though individual products (especially foundation) good as I think they will make you look frumpy.

Lipstick: rose gold so should be a deep rose. Weird tip: if you look at the skin on the inside of your lip (near your teeth ) - that shade will suit

Spend on: foundation, concealer, lipstick (I like chanel or lance me best, also guerlain or Mac - mac have the most colours)

You can go much cheaper on: eyeshadow, eyeliner, blush, poss mascara - mid range like loreal etc all fine here. I like mac for these too or bobbi brown, lancome for mascara

Look at blogs for this year's colours: try temptalia (I am not v up to date anymore on latest blogs, but if you Google 2015 swatches + whatever brand you like you will see the colours different counters have to decide which ones to try in person)

I think it's worth spending time to try makeup to but right thing... I wouldn't but a £20 top without trying on

Also: if your makeup does not perform well, return to counter. Estee is the best here

Okay Bobbi Brown it is I think. I have looked at the naked palettes in the past bit couldn't afford one, forgot about them until just now so will have a look at them all in debenhams on my lunch break tomorrow Smile.

Urban decay naked palettes def have shade you need: highly recommend. You can also use dark brown shadow to emphasize your brows

Makeup: technique to apply and tools make the most difference. Do you have a good blush + powder brush? Get mac to show you eye brushes and buy theirs or some alternative (I hear eco tools good)

Make up updates take time but massively upgrade your look :)

Eyeshadow: you can save buy buying a quad from a midrange brand: loreal, Rev long, maybe line. (Same for blush) Buy a primer: mua from superdrug is 2.50 and works fine: buy brushes from boots or superdrug: a medium to apply, a thin to apply shading colours, one to blend.

Revlon do good lippies, maybelline mascaras and gel liner very good.

Spend on foundation

I had planned to spend the most on foundation, around £30 I was thinking. The eye liner I have seen is maybelline for £7.99 and I am happy to go cheaper on other stuff if there are good reviews, like my lipstick and eye shadow. I'm just not sure if I need foundation or BB cream which is the main reason I want to go for a makeover. pdxs I forgot about brushes Hmm, think I should have started buying earlier, the wedding is 6th Nov, I don't think my bank balance will be too happy by then!

Also thank you all SO much for the help, I'm already feeling stressed about getting it right on the day, this is the first wedding I have been to in years where I have a) been an important guest and b) not had my make up done professionally Confused.

Nars Alhambra eyeshadow duo has a really nice rose gold shade and the champagne shade can double up as a highlighter

I love estee lauder foundation but if your getting pictures took step away from anything that contains sunscreen. The flash will make your face go white! Makeup forever hd foundation is best for pictures. Benefit for highlighter. And I find no 7 really under rated for eyeshadow, I prefer these rather than my urban decay pallettes. 'Drugstore' lipstick go to revlon and more 'highend' go to mac. Enjoy the wedding Smile

The urban decay naked 3 palette would be good.

I like the real techniques stippling brush for applying foundation, gets a really even finish and easy to build up. Lancome Tient Idole 24hr foundation comes in a good range of shades and lasts really well which is a factor for a wedding.

You're welcome... and here is a cheeky naughty tip. Get foundation samples! Lancome will give you a little bottle which will last a week (I ask for one every time I buy a new foundation and use for travel), others do too... you want to see how foundation wears before you buy and that type of sampling is built into counters' business model. You might be able to get samples of eye concealer too but foundation Def

Use savings to fund brushes and buy your foundation the next mon th! Not bb cream for an event... its lighter so imo good for a mascara/lip gloss 'I'm not wearing makeup look' vs being 'polished'

Let us know what you decide in the end

Once you have products, do a trial run + do that 2 or 3 times with eye makeup as that is where there is scope for being off... you want to enjoy the day without worrying about that

I have just been out and bought my eyeliner and had a look at the naked palettes, I think I'm going to go for naked 3 but my birthday is coming up so might ask DP if he wants to buy me it. I also bought a 2 pack of eco-tool brushes so now I just need a cheap-ish foundation brush, foundation and lipstick. I used to have a really good no7 lipstick but can't remember which it was, can anyone recommend any of the no7 ones?
