How do you wear capes/wraps?

I've just bought this cape. The plan is to wear it with skinny jeans, brogues and a long sleeved plain top.

Having tried it on though it is HUGE. I've got other ponchos, but this is much more expansive in terms of fabric. I'm a bit worried about it swamping me, and I'm not that small (5'6" and a size 12). I'm also a bit worried that I look like I'm wearing a picnic blanket.

DS1, who is 13, says it looks cool. DH says it looks fine, but does keep whistling Clint Eastwood theme tunes.

If you've got a wrap how do you pull it off without looking swamped/silly?

I went out in mine last night, teamed it with a dress and flat boots. I pretty much reminded myself of a cross between Hermione Weasley, Sansa Stark and Little Red Riding Hood, and you know what? I couldn't give a shit. It felt ace having my cape swish around, I've wanted one for years, and if fashion says it is currently ok, I'm going with it.
Oh, and my partner kept quoting Obi Wan Kenobi. They are just jealous because they can't get away with wearing capes themselves.

I think I just need to bite the bullet and go with the size of it. I've been perusing Pinterest and they do seem to be supposed to be that big.

I remember feeling a bit self conscious about wearing a poncho when they were last in fashion, but once I got over it I ended up wearing it to death.

My husband wore a cape on our wedding day and really enjoyed himself with it. Get the husbands to take you to a Halloween party so they can dress up.

The ony problem I have with capes as an overweight hourglass is that it hides my waist and I look like a blob, so I am not going in for them.

There is also a difference between Scottish Widows type capes (i'd quite like one of those , don't know if I could pull off the look) and the blankety ones. I think it helps if you have really slender legs in skinny jeans, say, descending from all the fabric.

I saw a woman in the pub the other night wearing a grey one, over a charcoal fairly body con drapey dress. She had short grey hair and looked amazing.

I'm wearing a long Aztec-ish one today, stolen from dd1. Dp also mentioned Clint Eastwood. I probably look ridiculous but I've felt cosy all day. Wearing it with skinnies, a plain top and Chelsea boots.

I bought one from eBay (I liked the Sainsburys Tu one but it was basically a rectangle with a hood so lots of excess sleeve fabric)

The one I bought is a proper cape shape, tiny hook&eye collar fastening (I might but a brooch there) and vertical slits for sleeves, but no hood.

I plan to wear over jeans and a fine closefit jumper or white shirt maybe? I don't need layers and layers (hot flushes)

Only downside is my handbag would need to be handheld, crossbody or on shoulder wouldn't work.

Think you have to match the fabric to your frame? I have very broad shoulders - anything chunky or heavyweight looks like a horse blanket (despite long legs).

Have just bought a fine knit wrap: this works just fine.

This is the cape I just bought - very different from the OP's - I love it Grin and I'll wear it with skinnies, ankle boots and fine(ish) knit jumper..
