My natural colour is auburn but I colour it very dark brown, after doing my roots a couple of weeks ago, last week I felt like a change & dyed my hair using Loreal casting creme gloss in Plum, a semi permanent colour - which I really like, it's quite dark, with a slight purple hue.

Because I've done it only a week after doing my roots, my hair is all one colour, but here's my dilemma - when my roots start coming through, and if I put this plum colour on, because obviously my natural colour is a lot lighter, the plum dye will result in a more vivid colour, so basically I'll be left with bright purple roots & dark ends won't I?

How will I combat this, without having to apply two colours at separate times at my roots? Would I be able to mix a dark brown with the plum, both being Loreal casting Ceme gloss ones? Would that work?

Not a hairdresser but my logic says the same as you. I would need to do roots first with base colour , then apply the plum .

Or do roots base colour, then do strips of plum in the hope you get a bit more wear out of it.

Thanks for your reply. I think I'll probably mix the two, and do it that way. The plum does turn out very dark, but I don't know how dark it'll be on my virgin hair - it'll obviously be lighter & I hate that when you see 'root glow' - which with it being a plum shade there's a definite chance of that result, so hopefully by mixing it with the dark brown, it should tone it down. I could just mix a small amount together, enough for my roots & then I'll have the rest of the plum colourant to put through the rest of my hair. Either that or like you say apply a dark brown at the roots first, then after a few days put the plum through.

I need a very dark plum brown colour that will be dark enough to match my length & ends & then I wouldn't have to faff on!
