Outlining with brown lipliner

I was a 90s teenager so in theory the idea of outlining in brown lipliner should induce terror in me, but I keep seeing it all over the place, looking all lovely and subtle and creating nice gentle shadow that actually looks good.

Tried it today with a light brown eyeliner Blush and apart from being a faff to blend, I think it kind of works. Am I delusional? Is anyone else giving it a go?

I never stopped.
I can't remember the name of the one I have now but I used to have Mac Spice and I generally wear a pinky nude lip with it.
It needs careful application

Oh dear, it doesn't seem promising! This is what I was hoping to achieve. Will do a photo later when I've done my makeup and had an upper lip wax

I don't think her lips are lined with a liner - just lipstick with a lip brush and then filled in

And poor old Geri! I think she looks lovely nowadays. I remember my sister having a massive girl crush on Ginger Spice and trying desperately to emulate that exact look. Scarily she achieved it.

You're not delusional. I was just a kid in the 90s so everything the Spice Girls done looked super cool back then to me anyway, but now I'm in my twenties I see loads of MUAs posting lip-liner techniques using brown online and it looks great, as long as it's done properly!

She does say in the tutorial that it's a liner, in fact she says the same thing, that she was really sceptical about it too. It's from the Small Things blog btw. She always looks gorgeous imo though, so maybe I am just delusional!

Although the ones I've seen are not as subtle as the one you've posted. I don't think that one has any lip liner on?

Sorry - x post!

Thanks damsel, I think I do need to do a bit more research and make sure to spend some time practising the technique to make sure I don't end up looking like a Kardashian reject. The scary thing is the lighting in my bathroom is shit and the only natural light is from a window to the right when I'm looking in the mirror. I look horribly lopsided when I step outside sometimes!

Basically what you do is you get a brown lip liner. Really, it has to be a lip liner for it to work. Not a harsh dark brown.

Next apply to the outline of the lips, but lightly. Also add extra at the corners on the actual lips as of shading. Do the bottom lip where it kind of dips in the middle, and again lightly as if shading. Finally the same with the top.

Then apply your color. If
You do it correctly you cannot see the brown.

Works with different colors depending on the lipstick color.

I've just had a look... I don't think she does say it's an eye liner, just "The part of the look that was most daunting to me was lining my lips in a brown liner. But I smudged it enough to really create what looked like a shadow instead of a harsh line." I think she uses a proper lip liner but just isn't used to wearing a darker colour. She is very gorgeous isn't she Envy

bloodyteenagers That's awesome, thank you. Essentially I've been doing the exact opposite of what you said to do! I've been avoiding the corners because it seemed to look a bit like a bad face lift, but that must be because I've been going a touch too far outside the natural line I think.

Going to get an actual lipliner and stop being a tight arse trying to use eyeliner.

Angelica she's very pretty and has awesome hair! I tried to achieve something similar to her hair colour a while ago but it really, really didn't work. And I love all the grey she wears, but it makes me look deathly ill. I really should find a makeup blogger who I actually slightly resemble a little bit!

I use a nude (pale brownish pink) barely perceptible Chanel lip pencil in Natural, and the results are amazing, subtle definition. But you can only spot lip liner on people if they have cack-handed it. The 1990s look works better if your skintone and lips are darker than average.

Spice is more reddy than brown. NYX do one called 1000 years (available cheaply on eBay) and apparently ???? it's a dupe for MAC stone which I wanted that was discontinued.
