If you use very little, natural make-up what do you do about eyes

For years I used practically no make-up, partly because I don't like the "made-up" look, party because I'm too lazy to do it properly everyday and party because I don't really know how.

Over recent years I've started using a mineral foundation, which I have to admit is a big improvement, a touch of blusher, ditto and either tinted lipsalve or a neutral lip gloss.

Now my eyes. To my eyes, mascara just looks like a couple of big spiders have attached themselves, even if I apply it lightly. What am I doing wrong? I realise some people like the fact that mascara gives them huge unnatural looking lashes, but what do you do if you want a more natural look?

Two things that I can think of; one is to tint your lashes (easy to do at home, recommend Eyelure rather than Colorsport). This won't make a great difference unless your lashes are very fair, though.
Second is to really wipe the mascara brush off very well on the edge of the tube before applying, or even blot it with a tissue (bit wasteful though). Apply very lightly right from the roots. There are probably good tutorials on Youtube.

Grin at the spider look, I agree!

Just doing you upper lashes will look more natural.
Use brown instead of black.
Don't go for super mega volume / manga eyes or other stuff like that. I usually get the cheapest mascara with the most bog standard name.

I would only apply once, and only the tips (from about half way-ish).
If I apply mascara from the root I definitely end up with spider eyes!

are you very pale? maybe use brown mascara and just brush it on the underside of your top lashes rather than coat both sides. i usually smudge a bit of neutral /brown on my top lid and a tiny bit under my lower lashes so that my eyes don't seem to disappear into my head.

i may look ridiculous but i don't care Grin

I don't use mascara.

Liner, smudgy shadow sticks yes, but I look too made up with mascara.
Don't need it.

I don't wear any eye makeup but I have randomly dark eyelashes and blonde hair, so they stand out enough. I think dye your eyelashes and pencil your eyebrows and keep them groomed. Maybe a little taupe eyeshadow and some undereye brightening concealer to make your eyes pop a little.

I'm a similar latecomer to makeup and also useless with mascara.

I get my lashes dyed every now and then.
If I want to go all out and actually bother with mascara, Estee Lauder Double wear is the only one that doesn't go all lumpy and spidery on me.

Most times I just make do with dyed lashes and eyelash curler if I can be arsed
Surprisingly eye liner is very good for the no make up look if you don't go overboard with it. It makes your lashes look better than they actually are

Clear mascara?

I stopped wearing mascara a few months ago as I found it very drying around my eyes. I'm going to look into the Estee Lauder Double Wear one though as I've read good things. Also, Clinique's Naturally Glossy mascara is a good one for quite a natural look and comes in black/brown.

When I'm not doing full eye make up, I pop a small amount of concealer on eyelids up to brows and really blend it in just to cover dark marks/veins etc and then lightly brush over a translucent setting powder. Follow with a thin coat of mascara just to make lashes more noticable Smile

AdventureBe - also a natural make up person here. Why do you want to use mascara, is it for darkening your lashes?

If not, my advice is just don't wear any! If you want to highlight your eyes a little bit, I use a dark liner on the upper lid, makes me look more awake. When I first dabbled in makeup, I bought mascara because so many people think it's essential but it does nothing for me.

Rarely wear mascara - only for glam evenings, I agree it gives a 'made-up' look. If I had time I would get my lashes tinted regularly as this looks nice and subtle, but otherwise I just leave them, bit of concealer on lids and neat brows will do the job. Good pink blusher will open your eyes up plenty IMO.

I think mascara makes a massive difference, but you don't have to apply loads. If it clumps or is too much, I comb through with a lash comb.
Brown mascara is more subtle imo, and there are some mascaras that just look more natural than others. I like Estee Lauder Double Wear Lengthening mascara.

Tightlining is very subtle and just makes the lashes look thicker and darker - I use a flat liner brush (mac 212) and a dark brown powder shadow (mac mystery), but you can use black or a gel liner.
