If bobs are mumsy & layers are naff, then what is an ok hairstyle? Need inspiration please

I really don't like my hairstyle. The recent threads about the 'Rachel' cut have got me thinking that mine is some form of that style & I fancy a change.
I often see on here that bobs are considered mumsy & layers seem to be a no no so what hairstyles do you all have?

Mine is layered because if it's all one length it is really heavy & thick & just hangs with no shape. That's not a good look either.
I've had lots of photos taken recently & I pretty much hate my hair in every one. I got a BBH which I thought did a wonderful job in the mirror but in photos I look like I'm back in the 80's!!

Any suggestions please?

No suggestions but I'm interested in this too. Why are bobs considered mumsy?

I have a shoulder length bob and I don't think it's mumsy at all. It looks way better than it did long.

I am hankering after this one - currently my hair is way past shoulder-length and just hands there. Or rather it does nothing because I always put it up Hmm

But the basic bob can be adapted in many different ways ! Eg a very angular Bob with a very short fringe is intresting ! Cf with a helmet bob ! I think you can't write all bobs off as there can be very different cuts .
I'd start with yr face shape and what features you want to highlight . A good hairdresser could discuss this .

Why are bobs mumsy? I look like eap with long hair and it makes me all horribly hot and sweaty. I'd look like a boy if I had short hair. I look like a bag of spanners with my hair tied back. A bob is the only thing that works. And I'm a mum. Shit.

I'll still mark my placeon your thread Grin

Just to say I don't personally think bobs are mumsy, it's what I've seen been mentioned on here in the past.

Elquinto I am the same as you & feel like actually a bob is about the only thing that doesn't make me look like an 80's throwback. I have very thick wavy hair though & find a bob does take quite a bit of work to look good.

I recently had my hair cut into a bob. Mine is mumsy. It's badly cut. I hate it. None of the photos I took with me to the hairdresser were mumsy however. I think a bob can be pretty cool.

I've just had mine a bit like the first of those pictures- love it! I have learned the joys of Sea Salt spray and rediscovered ear-rings.

Really pleased I went for a change, I had a chin length bob before that.

I don't think any hair styles are bad for mumsy, it's about what suits you.
Go and book a hair dressing appointment and have consolation about what style will suit you

Yazzy I love that style. Mine is a tiny bit longer but quite a lot more layered. Think I'm going to get something done before my hols.

I think if you have a look round the school playground you'll find a sea of bobs, that what ours looks like anyway. I've got a chin length bob,it's angled and disjointed so I hope it's not as 'mumsy' as it could be. I switch between this and a pixie but I feel better with a bit of length.

Mine is like Pic 1.

But I'd LOVE to have something like Pic 2! (definitely NOT boring)

Haven't had the courage to do it yet; maybe when I've lost a couple of stone...

Not sure if having curly hair makes a difference?

I had a long bob for years and TBh, I did not alot with it. Not mumsy but it didn't set the world alight either.

I have a crop now (though I'm growing the top layers a bit , I will get the back close cropped again)

I saw "8 out of 10 Cats" , Dawn O'Porter was on.................her hair Shock Why? She has lovely glossy dark hair, what's with the mushroom cut Confused
That goes beyond mumsy.

But...but..but.....you know that 'bobs are mumsy' was probably written by about five people and you can't see how shit their hair is!

This reminds me of a cleaner I had who, when I complained about her work said 'I clean it like its my own'. Her home presumably being a shit hole

Ooh Pacific, that first one is great. I reckon I could do that, but the bit at the front would drive me wild. You reckon it would work with a shorter fringe?

I had dinner with the frumpiest woman I think I know about two months ago (among others). A reunion of sorts. I nearly fell off my chair when she walked in the door because she looked amazing, having cut her previously long hair into a "wob" or wavy bob.
