The bag to end all bags - poll

It's the 'big one' approaching. I've decided to treat myself to massively indulgent super-bag purchase. Chanel 2.55 or Hermes Kelly?

I'll still be wearing this in 50 years time so need to choose wisely.

Your vote?

2.55, i love mine, i have black and cream and many other chanel bags.
My favorite Hermes is the Jypsiere, the kelly is a nice bag, but it just wouldnt suit my lifestyle, and like the birkin i am over it, and i am a chanel girl.

Ooooo chanel 2.55 all the way :) not that I have a hope in hell of having one but it's my dream bag ....

The Chanel.

It looks iconic.

The Hermes looks a bit everyday in comparison.

Also, Envy Envy.

The Chanel - the Kelly is heavy and uncomfortable imo

Have you considered a different Hermes? Or a Delvaux?

I love the 2.55 - I kicked myself hugely when a grey calfskin went for 140 quid on EBay and I didn't buy it Shock because it was a middle of the night one

Another vote for the Chanel here :)

Ah now I'd say Kelly. Wink I find the shape so perfect.

Just to get it all confused after it looked settled!

I've very recently bought a chanel classic double flap in jumbo size - I love it.

I spent hours looking at bags and decided this was the best for me. Was very tempted by the reissue too but preferred that in burgundy/navy which weren't seasonal colours.

Mrs CB how big is jumbo? Sounds bigger than 2.55?

I don't want every day bag.

This will be indulgence bag. Bag for wearing with fake fur while chauffeured around and breakfasting at the Wolesley, and all and any expenditure put on account .

2.55 every time!! I love mine.

MiL has 3 Kellys and I don't really like them at all.

What a lovely thing to be choosing!!

So you are talking about the reissue when you say 2.55 aren't you? Because that comes in different sizes.

The 'jumbo' is just under 12 inches.

I spent a lot of time on the purseforum researching the bags as well as in-store trying them all on.

is mine but in caviar leather which is more durable.

Yes think so mrs cb. I want smallish size though, guessing approx 25 cm wide. Ages since tried on, times have moved on.

I dithered for ages and ages.

It is a big purchase after all.

The reissue is less wide so I felt I wouldn't get very much in it.

If you have time to kill there are many many youtube videos showing unboxing/what people carry in their chanel bags. I lost hours of my lifet to these Wink

The Chanel.
Hermes Kelly is very mumsy.
I wouldn't take a present of it.
Well I might... just to sell it on

The Chanel. Also, Envy

I love both, although the Chanel looks more versatile. The Kelly looks more casual whereas the Chanel looks like you could use it for evening and during the day.

Can you not get both? Grin

I have had a Chanel 2.55 for a couple of years but don't wear it very often - maybe twice a year. It is a bit too formal for my lifestyle, In fact I like my taupe Miss Dior a lot more, better made and more durable (the lambskin scratches if you sneeze.) I'd probably think outside the box and get something else. Quilted Chanel bags were big in late 1980s/early 1990s, then were out of fashion for a long time - I think this will happen again. It was all about the Kelly when I was in my teens, when they had a comeback it was te Birkin - now Kelly is 'mumsy'.

The 2.55. No contest.

Report
MrsCampbellBlack · 08/06/2015 20:39

I think the distressed look of the 2.55 makes them very durable - certainly from all the research I did.

However if going for a classic flap - then the lambskin is very fragile indeed.

But the one I have looks fine/good with jeans but I wouldn't use it for evenings really. Well not dressy things.

I really dislike the Chanel and love the Hermes.

But I have a Mulberry Bayswater which is quite similar, so I am a bit biased.

Madbengalmum · 08/06/2015 20:43

I totally disagree the 2.55 surpases a fashion item, it is a classic.
Calfskin leather, if it is for a special bag, caviar is too daytime., heavy duty, Perfect for the maxi or Grand shopping tote.

Lambskin is very very fragile though - I don't think you'd dare use the classic in lambskin very often.

But depends if you want an everyday bag or not.

Also when everyone talks about the 2.55 they are referring to this aren't they. I think caviar version of this is seasonal and so not standard. Not sure about lambskin but they are generally calfskin which as I said before is pretty hard wearing.

It is very lovely - I was very torn between the two and spent hours, literally hours debating which one to get.

I think I may get the 2.55 at some point but when there is a navy or burgundy version again.

It is a very very lovely bag.
