Will a petticoat work with this dress?

I have a plain black dress for my graduation here

I'm quite tempted to get a petticoat to go underneath to make it flare a little more- I'm very up and down and it really just hangs, especially on my hips (the dress is size 8 but a little big).

What do you think?

A coloured perticoat would look nice I would just be concerned about whether it would make the skirt too short. If you have the dress can you go into a shop and try?
Also make sure the petticoat doesn't hang down in bits underneath the hem of the dress rather than just sitting underneath the hem sticking it out - sorry pet hate! smile

I don't know if a coloured one would be against the dress code- I was thinking black?

I am quite short as well (sigh!), so the dress comes about 3 inches below my knees anyway.

But with the right length of petticoat, do you think it would look alright?

I really don't think it'd take one, sorry. There's not enough volume in the skirt so it'd bunch up horribly when you move.

Any chance you could exchange it for something you'd feel better in?

I have an almost identical dress. I bought a little tulle peticoat to wear with it and they're fabulous together (if I do say so myself).

Thanks for being honest! No, it's worn now. I was just wondering.

Oh yes, a tulle layered one? Of course! <duh>

Hmmm, maybe I will try it!

Didn't realise the dress code! Yes black would work I think and you have enough length I think it will work

The one I bought wasn't too full. It was a bit like this. It was perfect with the dress.

LettuceLaughton Thu 04-Jun-15 23:08:40

yy, do. I was thinking of the full ones, 50's style. That wouldn't work.

CovetingAFiat500 Thu 04-Jun-15 23:09:49

Yes, one exactly like that! Just for a little flare. Thank you very much smile

I think it would look nice. I'd wear a belt to emphasise your waist.

Will you be wearing a cap and gown? If so, proceed with caution. I wore a similar dress with petticoat and I regret it. I looked like a circus tent. The capes are so voluminous so adding even more volume is not terribly Flattering....

Yes, it would look great with a petticoat. Not one of those huge rockabilly ones, obv.
