he will be five. I want smart but not stuffy. He is not part of the wedding party.

I've seen boys of that age in full mini suits but more often I've seen then in trousers and a shirt. Some have worn ties and others looked gorgeous in a mini waistcoat. I think as long as an effort to avoid jeans and sweatpants is made it doesn't matter, unless it's a very extravagant affair.

A friend dressed her adorable 5 year old nephew in a superman T shirt , with the words "Ring Security" on the back, smart shorts and converse sneakers with colourful laces . He was not a page boy (not that she had any) but he felt dressed up and able to join in . He behaved perfectly and added a sense of fun to the day !

I was wondering about a funky waistcoat of some kind and then just chinos and a casual shirt?

I would do chinos and shirt. Then waistcoat or casual blazer depending on weather/ location.

Sounds perfect Dueling, I've got loads of little boys in the family and that's exactly what they'd go in.

We used to do white linen shirt & chino shorts for summer weddings & christenings. Blue cotton shirts & navy chinos in the winter.

When my BIL and SIL got married last summer, it was a very relaxed affair. But DD was bridesmaid, so quite dressed up. I got 1 yr old DS dressed up too, in a shirt, tie and jacket combo from M&S, but, instead of matching trousers, he just wore shorts and sandals, which fitted in with the nature of the wedding. He LOVED the jacket. I'll be re-using the tie at another wedding in a few weeks, but this time it will just be smart shirt and trousers, instead of a jacket.

I think most people understand that young boys don't want to be too dressed up, but as long as they look smart and are reasonably happy with what they're wearing, it doesn't matter too much. Definitely a shirt rather than a T-shirt or a sweater, but apart from that, I think, whatever you've got is fine.

The last wedding I took my DS to (2.5 at the time), he wore some chinos (like a mustard yellow, but nice) from Monsoon and a cotton grandad shirt from H&M to keep him cool. I could've eaten him. Monsoon for boys is great.

DuelingFanjo · 27/05/2015 16:19

Mustard yellow is exactly what I was thinking. With what kind of shirt though? It's a winter wedding but we will be inside for most of it anyway.

Trousers and shirt with a waistcoat or tank top. Mine have wool or cotton tank tops which look gorgeous for weddings / christeninings/ parties and a bit less formal than a waistcoat.

PattiODoors · 27/05/2015 16:28

Yes to tank top

Try channelling Prince George (yes yes younger ofc but still...)

overmydeadbody · 27/05/2015 16:32

A good place to buy the right kind of things is Rachel Riley, that's where I have got DS bits form for weddings and garden parties when he was younger.

We go for chinos, smart shirt, waistcoat and then converse now he is older, but when he was younger I could get him into cute little shoes too Grin

TheVeryThing · 27/05/2015 16:51

I had a little shirt from Monsoon for my ds to wear to a wedding too, twas adorable.
I hate seeing small boys dressed as old men.

frankietwospots · 27/05/2015 16:55

This is the type of shirt my DS wore with the mustard yellow chinos:

Granted, it was a summer wedding. If it was winter, I'd get him one of Boden's laundered shirts like this: www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Boys-1H-12yrs-Shirts/21773-BBL/Boys-1H-12yrs-Reef-Gingham-Laundered-Shirt.html

And these were the Monsoon chinos but they only have them in navy (which would look lovely btw): uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_3,mon_3.2,mon_3.2.3/7189940605

CurlsLDN · 27/05/2015 17:01

Mustard yellow chinos and a white shirt sounds perfect. I got my ds some lovely braces and a bow tie from this etsy seller www.etsy.com/shop/TheSnappySapling

ErinBlockerBitch · 27/05/2015 17:02

Kilt is lovely on wee boys.

DuelingFanjo · 27/05/2015 17:15

Oh I LOVE that blue H&M shirt. I recon he could get away with that for a winter wedding with a vest or T-shirt underneath.

I like this but it looks huge

Darkish trousers, smart shirt and jumper. You don't want to be the mum snarling at her child to "get up off the floor" before the bride even hits the aisle Grin

Oly4 · 27/05/2015 20:57

Chinos and shirt. Mini suits look chavvy in my opinion!
