So how can I get a 50s look from my wardrobe / makeup? Don't have time to buy anything. Don't have the money either.

I have 2 dresses in mind. One is a 50s inspired summer dress, it's in the shape of a prom dress but it's quite casual. The colours are very summery and I think would look silly with tights, however bare legs would be rather cold. It comes up just above the knee

The other dress is red polka dot, below the knee, sort of puffed capped sleeves. It's nice but makes me look a bit frumpy I think. But better for this dreary weather.

I have long curly / wavy hair. Is there something simple I can do, 50s inspired?

Of course lots of eyeliner (which I do anyway).

I also have a pair of black gloves I wore to fancy dress last year.

Any ideas or comments?

Would bare legs be a madness? Or would black tights be wrong with a summer dress?

Black tights would be so wrong. Can't you wear nude tights if you're really that cold?

I'd go for the prom style dress - just google 'easy 50s hair' or something, there is millions of great tutorials.

Youtube is packed with tutorials for simple retro looks.

A high pony tail would look very 50s, or you could do sort of pleat/roll at the back and slightly quiffy front. Big earrings too.

I would wear nude rights with the summery dress.

Or- you could go rolled up jeans, sneakers, white beat, plaid shirt worn open and your hair piled up with a knotted scarf? Much warmer!

I've never worn nude tights in my life. I imagine my legs would look like raw sausages. And don't imagine they'd provide much warmth? Could be wrong on both counts of course. Might just buy myself a pair to try.

I had a look at the hair tutorials earlier but they all look really complicated. Have to consider I'll be getting ready in my work bogs at 5 tomorrow, and I'll have less than half an hour before my train!

Ooh! Jeans option, I didn't think of that, with the scarf! Great idea. Knew mums net would throw something in that I hadn't thought of. You lot never fail me!! Will have to dig out my jeans and try and squeeze into them

You can do your hair in a really easy pomp style - vintageous on you tube has a tutorial that is great. I'll try to link for you.

Oh god Edward there are seriously thousands of vintage/retro tutorials! Loads are really hard (don't even look at the wet set ones) but so many are super easy.

I'd go for a high ponytail with a pomp at the front, red lipstick and winged eyeliner (if you can do it because I can't)

Have watched a bit of that link, thank you looks amazing and easy! But I can't properly look as I have a toddler here who wants to play doctors!

Just praying the jeans fit. It's been so long. Actually I'm not even sure if I have them still. Confused

Will have a look when little one has gone to bed. Definitely will be adding a scarf to my head though. Great idea.

Turn the collar of your shirt up at the back with the "wings" out, push the sleeves up towards your elbows.
Bright red lipstick, large plain earrings, glittery hair slide at the side of your head, ballet flats, white or neon short socks.

The only shirt I own is a blue and white stripey 'office' type one, definitely not right for this look.

Think I'll text my work mate to see if she has anything she can lend me. Also will dig out what has been bagged away for years and see if I have anything

My jeans don't fit. Andy don't have a shirt.

Leggings wouldn't do instead of jeans, would they? If my mate could lend me a shirt

I like the summer dress and the spotty skirt. Could you wear the skirt with top tucked in and a belt?

red polka dot dress with any small scarf at neck.
back comb front of hair so you have a quiff, hold in with few hairpins and then wear loose with some curls at end of hair (if possible).
