Jicky ...giving it a second chance .. Love or hate ?

Whilst impatiently waiting for my decants of Malles portrait of a lady and chanel 28 la pausA I have found a decany of Jicky I bought ages ago ! At the time I was so disappointed and couldn't get past the barn yard opening notes ! Other reviews say a lemon / lavender opening but I didn't get that and had to wash it off ! So having a lazy morning I decided to revisit it ..
At the moment it's so complex and keeps changing but I think I like it .. Not one to wear to work but more a guilty pleasure ! Might have to retry misouko .. That made me feel really nauseous initially .. Like a mix of vomit and dirty nappies ., but I really want to love it !!

It is really hardcore and a guilty pleasure - animalic, sexy, farty, naughty... I love an animalic touch in my perfumes (and own lots of classic chypres, including vintage Mitsy). The French houses excel at this. Without it, you get squeaky clean Estee Lauder/Jo Malone type stuff Wink

It's geting more schizophrenic as time goes on ! Patchouli coming through now ! Sort of coramandel ?? Think I may actually love it !! And nd the plus side my partner just asked what it was and actually likes it :)

Oh and very good of you to revisit things you hated initially. Classics in perfumery are like great wines, you'll need to train your nose/palate to appreciate some of them - and immediately likeable easy perfumes are the chardonnays and proseccos Wink

I initially hated Chanel No. 5 (super soapy) and Mitsouko (musty fur coat), now I really love them! I love the infinite nuances and endless twists and turns in how the perfume unfolds. But if Jicky is too tricky, just swap it! 28 La Pausa should be easier to wear, it's my warm-weather party go-to perfume.

Love la pausA for summer, sycomore for autumn and coramandel for winter :) also love chanel no 5 even if my daughter says I smell like a granny ! Says she who douses herself in prada candy :) and portrait of a lady is my all my time favourite !! ( just wish I had the budget for my expensive tastes ;) thank goodness for decants :)

I know - but there is no going back after you've learned about the great stuff. There are some exceptions though - I always test the new Aqua Allegorias, this year's is quite nice, a sparkling green tea/citrus. And I heard that L'Occitane have an iris now - haven't tried it yet though.

Every time I've tried Jicky, my conclusion has been that it smells like poo. I've given up.

Yes I definitely got the 'poo' initially but have managed to get past it and now I love it !

I know what you mean, I didn't like it at first either. Now I love me that dirty skanky French lavender honk! :)

FF is right. I ended up loving some of the unlikeliest perfumes after returning to them, you can't beat the classics. This evening I'm going to a party and am trying to decide between Portrait of a Lady and Carnal Flower, two perfumes I loathed initially.

Loved portrait from from first sniff :) I think I have carnal flower in my last order ? Hope so .. Really need to smell it ! Tried to find my mitsouko but have a feeling I may have thrown it out as it repulsed me initially but then jicky frightened me first try too ! Il have another look ..,

Newly question, but where is the best place for decants?
I adore Guerlain, Mitsouko makes me feel all ...you know. Blush its tge scent I imagine Joan wears in Mad Men.

Crystal Flacon. Many sellers are Basenoters, so easier to find unisex/ masculine stuff. The Perfumed Court and Surrender to Chance in the US. Sometimes also eBay.

Ladies who have already conquered Jicky: Secretions Magnifiques and Musc Koublai Khan. Take it to the next level Wink
Bal à Versailles is my favorite I-am-a-society-lady-but-just-peeed-in-my-pants perfume.

Oh wow I've stumbled into the twilight zone! Grin

I didn't understand a word of the OP - I thought it was all typos and didn't even know you were talking about perfume until the responses BlushBlush

Love MN and all its esoteric chat...

Fortunately this is the rabbithole

We should probably revive the perfumistas thread, this level of expertise should not be wasted, people here would scare the hell out of most salespeople Wink

I had this conversation today at Marionnaud
FF: Do you have Guerlain?
salesgirl: No, just the perfumes

I'm interested now, why would you want to smell of poo? Blush

And actually while I'm here, I bought some Jo Malone Earl Grey and Cucumber today for a friend's birthday. What do you experts think? Am I hopelessly mainstream and lacking in taste? Hmm

That reminds me - I have samples of Jicky and Bal a Versailles, and I've always been a bit scared to wear them out. DH did like BaV, though...

fortunately your next perfume will be Tom Ford's Black Orchid, cucumber dipped in chocolate with off notes of poo Wink
Tom can do no wrong.

CointreauVersial I'm a bit more wimpy these days too...

Tom...so fucking sexy I'd shag myself.

fortunately I realize I was being a bit flippant. Jo Malone and Tom Ford are actually owned by the same parent company but they have quite different profiles. Jo Malone offerings are perfectly lovely, and bergamot and cucumber sound gorgeous together, very good and refreshing for summer. Summer is the time when I switch to light and refreshing cologne type perfumes, and Jo Malones tend to be cologne type.

Definitely cologne type. I used to love No5 and was definitely a perfume wearer until becoming a mother 20 years ago. Since then I've become all sensitive and get sore eyes and a headache from anything other than JM.
I'm not knowledgeable about scents by any means, but I definitely notice the lack of complexity and mourn the sophistication of 'proper' pervume.
What are decants, btw?

Oh I'm sorry to have missed this today! I wore Jicky all through my late 20s (squandering my first job earnings), got bored and struck out for new things. Then was given a bottle of actual perfume (rather than edp) for my 30th so was rather stuck with it.

It took a while to find anything that did the same thing. I once sniffed the original Shocking by Schiaparelli - was unforgettable. I've worked my way through a massive sample box of O'Driu fragrances - some of which almost made me cry - but on the whole they're too masculine for me. Currently playing with Vero Kern's Onda, Rubj and Rozy which I hope I'll never tire of.

I'm waiting for a sample of Sadanne by Slumberhouse. It sounds just what I want right now.

When I have a perfect life I'll wear Dans Tes Bras at home and Lipstick Rose to dance on tables ...

There is a whole world of perfumes out there which has escaped me completely until recently!

I tried Mitsouko today and loved it but it faded so quickly. I put Paloma Picasso on one wrist and it is still there in softened form now but the Mitsouko was gone within an hour which seems odd

Oops posted too soon. I also wanted to know what are decants?

Also how do you find and try these less common fragrances? I don't live near any big towns and even further from anywhere sophisticated. Where would I find them?
