What to do with long, thin and somewhat greying hair.

I have waist length hair but it's very thin hair and it looks like it's thinning even more on the top of my head =( I've also noticed more and more silver hairs as well. My normal colour is a deep brown. I haven't been to the hairdressers in at least two years but now I am starting to feel the need to sort myself out. Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe cutting it a bit shorter and getting a perm so that once it was a bit curly it was should length.

Probably best to discuss what you want with a hairdresser. Cutting it shorter will help it look thicker. I think just below shoulder length or shorter is very flattering for fine hair. Can you put a pic up?

I can't imagine a perm is a good idea, I would have thought you'd want to minimise the chemicals as much as you can.
A choppy bob might look nice.

This article might be helpful.

Being really blunt- unless long hair is in superb condition you may as well have it cut.
The 'effect' of long hair is really lost- IMO- once it's much beyond shoulder length- can't see the point in having it longer because it doesn't frame the face, it just hangs down the back.

I'd say have it cut to just above your shoulders at least and talk about having a mix of lowlights in to boost the colour and they will also add thickness.

Perms don't work that well on thin hair and can damage it- why do you want a perm?

Have you taken any advice regarding thinning hair? There's lots of info on the Philip Kingsley website.

What is your diet like?
A good multi-vit and mineral supplement would help.

Maybe it's time for a good hair cut.

I used to have hair about that length and my hairdresser told me that really long hair can 'pull' at the roots as you get older. I don't think he was doing it to get me to have my hair cut more often - he knows from experience that a year I have 4 haircuts is a good one, and that 2 or 3 a year is more usual for me Wink. I also found mine got quite straggly once it was getting near my waist, and a bit off the length made it look much fuller.

I don't colour mine - I aspire to a grey streak and also, practically, know I would be awful at keeping the roots done. But a good cut every now and again makes a lot of difference.

I'd suggest cutting it into short layers to gain fullness. The length of your hair is making the impression of thinness worse by dragging it down.

A perm as it is would prob be a disaster - the hair is too long and it would again draw attention to the fact you were trying to cover up a problem.

Plus you don't really know what your hair will look like once it's shorter - it may bounce up a lot once it's not weighted down. I have v fine hair an as soon as it gets to touch my shoulders it's too heavy and starts to look like a v thin helmet Sad but in short layers it can look like full waves Grin
