Opinion on this diamond ring and does anyone know if it's a fair price?

//here

It'll be an engagment/eternity/wedding ring all rolled into one.

IF you know about diamond, would this be a fair price? Wonder if we are getting s good deal?

Also, do you like it?

I have a ring very similar to that which I inherited off my mother. I didn't like it at first, not my style at all. However, I wear it all the time as it was my mums and now I absolutely love. It doesn't catch on anything and is very practical as well as pretty. I've had many compliments on it.
I have no idea if that is a good price or not.

guilianna · 29/03/2015 22:21

I like it (suits your user name OP).

3luckystars · 29/03/2015 22:21

I don't know much about diamonds but I don't like that ring at all, I am sorry it looks fake in the photo.

Would you consider getting something made especially, you would get a lovely ring for that money.

MmeLindor · 29/03/2015 22:27

tbh, its not my cup of tea, but it's you who will be wearing it.

How about this one similar, but slightly neater, I think

3luckystars · 29/03/2015 22:29

Here is a website that is great ideas for rings:

www.hkjewellery.co.uk/bespoke-engagement-rings-you-are-unique

Sorry if I offended you saying I didn't like it, I shouldn't have posted that. what matters is that YOU like it. I hope you get something really nice that you love. Best of luck.

FanSpamTastic · 29/03/2015 22:36

I have a ring from these guys - they were lovely. A family firm. If you can get to London go in and see them - they will ensure you get what you are looking for. They will also send you out a paste ring to try if you want to. Just to give you an idea on the design. All the diamonds are certificated. I have PD506w - I love it.

FanSpamTastic · 29/03/2015 22:39

And yes I thought they were good value - we shopped around a lot around hatton garden for this design and they were very good value.

atonofwashing · 29/03/2015 22:45

Hi Glittering.
Question is, do u like it?
Might be a good idea to research diamond clarity, cut and colour. Can't help u there.

My wedding rings are white gold, which is not as hard wearing as platinum ( or as expensive), but it meant we could spend more on the diamonds. White gold can be re dipped. Also, I was advised that white gold/ platinum looked better against the diamond as it does not distract the eye from the diamonds as gold might do.

Just passing on the advice we were given, and took... I love my rings, and what ever you decide upon, I hope u do too.

TywysogesGymraeg · 29/03/2015 22:53

TBH the original ring is a bit bling IMO (you did ask), and pretentious. Less is more.
I'd be terrified to wear a ring that cost that much anyway

scarletforya · 29/03/2015 22:57

It wouldn't be as bad if it were in white gold or platinum. The yellow gold is making it look a bit ugly I think.

Oh, btw.
Forgot to say that maybe not such a good idea to have diamonds that go all round the ring. Reason being that you don't see the stones underneath and they could get knocked and damaged if u wear the ring all the time.

That was another piece of advice I took from the Jeweller. Fewer diamonds, but better ones...Grin

mugfacemess · 29/03/2015 23:25

Seems like a fair price

But imagine the one diamond you could get for that money!

CountingThePennies · 29/03/2015 23:26

Is it full diamond?

I m sorry but i dont like it either

Branleuse · 29/03/2015 23:27

it looks like a 70s ashtray. Sorry

mowglik · 30/03/2015 00:28

I like the james Allen one more, but try similar styles on and see what suits your hands, you might be surprised and go for a totally different style once you've tried a few on..sorry no help on value but do check the quality of the diamonds used are reasonable

Ps about not being able to see the bottom stones on the eternity ring I disagree, I have a half eternity and a full eternity for my wedding ring and the half eternity really bugs me cos I have to make sure it's always lined up and centred, so I'm glad that I don't have to worry about that with my wedding ring

florascotia · 30/03/2015 07:11

Style - have you ever tried a ring with similar 'hard edges' on? Some people find them uncomfortable, and you say you plan to wear it all the time. Also, if you have/plan to have young children, any ring is going to get grubby, sticky (and worse). That design will need a lot of cleaning if those tiny holes at the back are not going to get clogged.

I am not commenting on the quality of the stones - who can tell from a web photo? - but the little diamonds used in a ring of that kind of design that are often not top quality. As previous posters have said, you could get a ring with one or two or three really good (and quite big) stones for the same price.

For any new diamond ring, you might want to check that the stones are certified: www.qualitydiamonds.co.uk/the-difference-between-certified-uncertified-and-self-certified-diamonds
and are not 'blood diamonds':
www.amnestyusa.org/our-work/issues/business-and-human-rights/oil-gas-and-mining-industries/conflict-diamonds

Re value - secondhand rings are a much better bargain. A new ring loses a lot of its value the moment it leaves the shop.

Paddingtonthebear · 30/03/2015 08:45

Not keen on that design, sorry.

You could get something bespoke for that money. Google Catherine Budd Jewellry, she is excellent

Don't like the design but other than that, the individual diamonds will be tiny and as a result unlikely to be a decent quality of colour, clarity or cut. Price probably fair for what it is, there's a lot of stones and work in setting them, but you could get something with vastly better stones if you have fewer of them.

florascotia · 30/03/2015 10:33

OP - this style may very well not be to your taste (we all like different things) but it just shows you the sort of quality diamonds that you can get secondhand for round about the same price as the new ring you are considering:
www.carolefranks.com/Antique-Rings/-Diamond-Engagement-Ring---E-Colour/3000

If you are seriously thinking of secondhand, I'd suggest going to the nearest good independent jewellers, or to somewhere like the jewellery quarter in Birmingham.

orangefusion · 30/03/2015 10:44

I do know about diamonds, I worked at de beers as a sorter as my first job. However I know about rough, unpolished stones really but here goes:
Diamonds in themselves are not particularly valuable , or rare, small ones as in this ring are not like currency as gold might be. The carat weight might total a reasonable mass but unlike gold you cannot melt them down and make them into one, larger, more valuable stone. So you should choose and buy diamonds because you like them. Lots of small stones will glitter very prettily, but take a look at the fire and sparkle you get from a single stone of the same weight before you decide. Rings are such a personal thing, only you can decide.

Congratulations on your engagement and I hope you enjoy whichever ring you get.
