Where to shop in New York and what to buy?

I'm off to NYC in a few weeks time for training. I'm going to be based in the financial district for most of the time - but have got a whole day free at the end to spend shopping before I come home!

Suggestions for shops to go in, things to buy - clothes, accessories and beauty, and areas to browse much appreciated! Not too high end please as the budget isn't unlimited.

I've already heard about C21 and plan to spend most of my lunchtimes browsing there as its local.

Many thanks in advance!

the dollar is really strong at the moment. I hardly bought anything last time i was there as it wasn't any cheaper. Stick to american brands. Disney and toys r us were cheaper. I love Duanne reed pharmacies, OPI nail polish worked out abou £4, Clinique and Kiehl's were cheaper too.

I really like Old Navy. It's the same company as Gap and Banana Republic, but cheaper, and great for basics like t-shirts, pyjamas and summer dresses. Also the American Apparel outlet store has lots of bargains.

Bed, Bath and Beyond is fun to browse through. The one at 620 Avenue of the Americas is in the same building as a TJ Maxx (although I've never found anything interesting there myself) and close to a big Old Navy too.

Anthropologie cheaper. Banana republic, Mac etc US brands but if you have Mac at your airport like I do you may not save in U.S.!

If you're in finance district head to South street seaport nothing amazing re shops but I liked it. You can also do the commuter ferry to staten Island from there too.
