What do 11/12 year old girls wear these days?

Hi, not sure where to put this but...

My almost 12 year old daughter isn't interested in fashion or clothes or shopping which is fine by me, in fact long may it last. However, she needs some new clothes as she has grown out of everything she owns. All she seems to wear are navy striped tops and leggings/jeggings and whatever trainers are nearest the door, which is all very well, but I don't want to go out and buy 7 of the same tops and 7 of the same leggings. what are kids age 11 and 12 wearing at the moment? what (for want of a better word) is "trendy", what is not.

She will be starting high school with no uniform next Sept. and I don't want her to stand out by being so obviously dressed by Mum or wearing the same thing day in and day out. I also want to pre-empt any sudden epiphany where she suddenly decides she wants whatever her friends are wearing instead of what I have just got her...

My dds wardrobe is not that varied. Usually skinny jeans or tights and denim shorts, tshirts and hoodies. Converse on her feet. She doesn't like much else, things I bought last summer were never worn.

My 11.5 year old will only wear leggings - usually black, bright pink Doc Martins, striped long sleeve top and faux leather jacket. Long gone are the days of me picking her clothes!

DM boots, converse, skinny jeans or leggings. Biker jackets, green military jacket. Bright coloured tops.

My dd is 11 & growing like a weed. No designer stuff here, but she does like her clothes.

She chose some black ankle boots from Clarks (size6.5 so kids range doesn't fit), indigo skinny jeans from Tesco & blue & black jeggings from Asda.

She also has an eyelash style jumper, cardi & a couple of other jumpers from Asda. These are worn with long sleeve tops.

She has 1 skater dress (wears with opaque tights &black ankle boots) for 'best'.

She also has the ubiquitous khaki parka.

Dd is 12 and in year 7. The standard "look" is skinny jeans (as tight as possible) with long sleeved stripy primark t shirts and / or checked shirts or jumpers from new look. Most of her clothes are from primark and new look.

Shoes wise she loves converse and is desperate for a pair of doc martens... (we can't afford the dms at the moment).

Hoodies from Gap and Hollister are also very popular.

She wouldn't be seen dead in a skirt or dress but maybe that's just my dd!

11 yo DD here. She tends to be in extremely skinny jeans with various t shirts or sweatshirts. Also keen on denim shorts with tights and sometimes a jersey skater dress with stars on it from H&M. She wouldn't really wear leggings except maybe under shorts or for sport - thinks they're babyish

On her feet usually trainers or uggs, when the weather warms up it will be converse. She too wants DMs

Most clothes come from H&M but she likes to shop in primark, topshop and new look. She is very tall (5'3") so lots of places the kids ranges are too small, same with shoes (size 6).

When I see her with her friends they all look similar. Trainers seem to be very popular among them still but maybe thats because they are all quite sporty?

Although the fashions might be a little different here in SA, my 12 year old (in winter) wear skinny jeans, leggings (with a skirt over usually), l/s tops usually unlogoed as she doesn't seem to like them. Her denim jacket was worn to death, as was the denim shirt which she wore open over a top or buttoned up and tied..

As we are just coming out of summer now and you are heading that way Wink, shorts and t-shirts, or blouse with shorts or skirts, 3/4 jeans, dresses - and everything is worn with Converse hitops Wink the crop top look has been big this year, but she wears a vest top underneath as i personally don't think that 'showing off the belly' look is suitable for her age.

Ah yes the crop top look.... dd has a lot of cropped jumpers but I don't let her bare her tummy so she wears a longer t shirt underneath.

Dd and her friends wouldn't wear leggings. She did in year 6 but now in year 7 they've all been disowned....

I also tend to buy a lot of women's stuff size 6 or even 8 for her. The womens long sleeved tops for £3 ish in primark are very popular and I buy her a size 8 in those so they look a bit baggier which she likes.

interesting thread! DD is just 11 and just wants to be comfy.

Zara have some nice sweatshirts, she has a couple from there
Boden have some decent quality T-shirts
apart from that she wears abercrombie tracksuit bottoms (hand me down from cousin)
a few different colour jeans from Gap
black nike trainers or ugg boots

for "good" i go to jigsaw junior, age 12-13 just about fits her (she is tall, in age 12 Gap jeans)

watching this thread with interest...

DD2 on the other hand is 9 and much more into fashion, lots of zara, shorts and tights, navy ugg boots.

My 11 nearly 12 year old lives in the same thing!!! Black leggings or stonewashed skinny jeans, lace trimmed or white nike socks, white nike air force trainers and belly tops Hmm sometimes she will wear her converse fitted Tracksuit bottoms!

I gave up buying her clothes when she was about 6 as he had firm ideas about what age will and won't wear, skirts and dresses are totally out! Summer she lived in denim shorts

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm amused how Converse features so prominently. But I would never have guessed that DMs are making a return! I LOVED my DMs as a teenager.

Armed with your info I have gone out and purchased the following:

-Skinny gap jeans (which turned out too long so we may need to stick with jeggings for now.)
-A converse logo long sleeved top and hoodie
-a check shirt from H&M because I saw some similar aged kids wearing them. (They were also wearing DMs, natch! Wink
-a plain black body warmer with detachable hood (she had asked for this)

They are all going down very well, thanks for your input!

I didn't get the denim skirt/shorts and tights because I know she would refuse to wear them.

what on earth is an eyelash jumper?

DD isn't girly.

She mainly wears skinny jeans or jeggings with a checked, flannel shirt with a plain t-shirt underneath. She likes blues and creams and pale greens. I recently treated her to a blue/cream stripped Superdry hooded top which she absolutely loves.

She lives and dies in Converse or her Uggs.

She's not that fashion conscious yet and hates anything frilly or patterned. She just likes to be comfy and warm.

Harem/traveller pants. We got them from Next and DD loves them. Comfortable, cool (in the style sense.) and cheap c.£11.

I'm laughing at the eyelash jumper. I'm slightly grossed out by the idea of a jumper that is supposed to resemble thousands of eyelashes.(Sorry to any Mumsnetters who own one.

Harem pants! I have a pair and they are very comfortable, although I don't feel young enough to successfully wear them outside the house. I might investigate them for DD, thanks for the suggestion Celeriacacacacacacaca.

for the yr7/8 girls that ds2 hangs around with it seems to be primark/newlook and river island with the odd more expensive item mixed in, such as real dr martens, converse, vans and a zip up Hollister/superdry hoodie to wear over the top of the primark longer length t-shirt/jumper and black leggings/jeggings. the other look is still the tight trousers, but with a cropped sweatshirt and a tight fitting vest top underneath. (not sure if that's because its cold or because mum said no belly baring)

short dungarees seem to be mixing in with the shorts and tights look now, so denim shorts/dungarees with thick black tights, and t-shirt underneath or a check shirt.

dd is just 9 and loves zara, we brought lots there the other week and the girls were all oohing and ahhing over dd's shopping haul and said they would wear most of the t-shirts/tops and shorts. dd got a lovely faux leather biker jacket from zara that one tiny girl tried on (was too small but then she is 3 years older than dd) and declared she was buying one next allowance day.

I still buy my 11 year old dd stuff from Jonny B - the teen section of Boden. She had had some lovely dresses from there which were much commented on. I agree that Jack Wills and Hollister and also popular for things like sweatshirts etc.

Can I just hijack and ask about coats? We live abroad and dd doesn't own a coat. Also the fashion here is 10 years behind at least.

Dd (11) needs a coat as we are coming hone soon and she is going to start high school in September.

She will be freezing as she thinks it's cold when it's 17.Grin

DD's idea of heaven is unlimited amounts to spend in Uniqulo. Her wardrobe consists almost entirely of their jeggings (she hates jeans), tops and hoodies in a variety of plain block colours. She's been in their XS size since she was 11.

Thanks Help that's really useful. I think parkas were in fashion when I was at school. Being a Geordie, I am forbidden from owning a coat myself!Grin
