Returning clothes, shoes etc bought online that don't fit / suit - do you do signed for / registered post?

I'm buying more and more clothes and shoes online but invariably they don't always fit or suit and so even an exchange isn't wanted. I need to return them by post for a refund. The costs mount up as I'm always nervous about just returning them by normal 1st/2nd class post in case they go missing or seller disputes receipt and so won't refund, so I pay extra for signed for / recorded just in case but it's like paying £5+ just to try something on. Latest example is a tummy control swimsuit that retails at £65 but was reduced to £45. Was too small and cost me £3.90 to return it.
Am I overworrying? What do you do? Have you ever had an item go missing or a seller dispute a refund as it didn't reach them?

You probably should always pay for Signed For delivery, because if it doesn't arrive it's your problem, not theirs...

But I rarely buy anything online unless they offer free return postage, which is often Collect+ or Hermes.

If you have to pay for a return, try MyHermes, which offers a tracked service with compensation but often works out cheaper than Royal Mail. Go to the MyHermes website, put in the details, pay for the postage, then print out a label and drop the parcel at a MyHermes location (usually a local shop or garage).

I never pay for signed for. My reasoning is this:
If i get proof that i posted it, its their problem, not mine.
They can argue the toss with Royal mail and get compensation.
I have never ever had anything not returned except to next and it was by hermes and they refunded me the money.

I just send by regular post using the prepaid label.

Same as Aridane, I've never returned anything by special or recorded delivery. They usually have a returns label to either print off or in the original package, I use that. Never had any problems.

It depends.. Up to about £100 I just use the return label but get proof of posting... But I recently returned 2 dresses worth over £300 to French Connection and I did that recorded delivery.... Just in case!

I usually only return to store or using collect +
But otherwise I just send by normal post. The post office are constantly trying to up sell me to recorded delivery but I think the chance of things going missing is small and I e I'll risk

I only buy online where there are free returns - and mostly only where there is free delivery too. When returning by post, I always get a proof of postage as the occasional item has gone missing.
