Top 5 ideas to update my wardrobe for a/w '14?

Help! I am feeling a bit boring and whatever the opposite of bang on trend is, and I want a few bits and bobs to liven up my wardrobe options. What would you buy to help you feel interesting this winter? Suggestions of clothes, shoes and accessories all welcome!

Ideas I currently have:

  1. a blanket cardigan/open poncho/shawl cardigan/whatever the hell you call those things that are basically a shaped blanket

  2. a bobble hat with a big bobble

  3. ermmmm that's it.

FWIW I mainly don't need formal office wear - a lot of my life is the casual end of smart casual (often see clients in a casual environment, so dressed down but need to look good).

Oh good challenge! these are all a bit random!

  1. Navy biker jacket from Next

  2. New Look Leopard faux fur coat

  3. Hobbs cable knit sweater

  4. new trainers or these

  5. This skirt in antique gold keeps catching my eye

Disclaimer, the above are heavily influenced by Nov issues of Red and InStyle mag!!

  1. Grey.
  2. Oversized slouchy/chunky jumpers.Maybe with a roll neck Ideally in grey ;)
  3. Leather/Pleather leggings. Available at all price points from H&M up.
  4. Tartan scarf
  5. Ankle boots, chelsea boot style. Would look great with the jumper and leggings above

I personally wouldn't bother with the clanket (as this poncho trend may be called, or I may have invented a new word) thing, I think its a bit too out there for everyday wear (ask yourself, would you wear to Tescos?) but maybe an oversized scarf over your current coat would do a similar job??
libertychick · 23/10/2014 13:30

Bah, link to the skirt doesn't work so I have pinned it here instead

Hopefully · 23/10/2014 13:33

Clanket sounds like an unpleasant and slightly embarrassing medical condition! You can just imagine them saying in hushed tones, "oh, she died of the clanket, the poor thing."

Am checking links, keep 'em coming!

"oh, she died of the clanket, the poor thing." :)

leedy · 23/10/2014 14:08

I am spurning the clanket trend on the basis that a)I did it in c. 1990 and b)at my advanced age hem hem there's a thin line between "chicly swathed" and "bag lady".

I am pleased at the trendiness of grey and ankle boots, as already own both, plentifully. Wondering if I could get away with pleather leggings at 42?

MrPop · 23/10/2014 14:09

Something faux fur, a scarf maybe? I love these

MrPop · 23/10/2014 14:12

Oh and a flannel shirt - loads around, uniqlo, mango, zara.

I like the look of this jumper

I just bought the above coat and have had many compliments. It is a gorgeous colour.

If i had money i would buy a giant tartan scarf and chelsea boots. But i don't due to coat!

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 23/10/2014 14:20

Oh, Liberty, that sparkly skirt is lovely. If I could find a cheaper one, how would you suggest wearing it??

Stokey · 23/10/2014 14:28

"Clanket" is great Grin I worry that they'll be no use as soon as it gets properly cold.

  1. Midi skirt
  2. Dress it down with high tops
  3. Stripey faux fur coat . Bit too muppet like? am also liking faux fur bags
  4. Brown leather pencil skirt - autumn colour Hopefully?
  5. Long brown boots
lurkingfromhome · 23/10/2014 14:30

leedy I am 47 and wearing pleather leggings!

I am wearing them with a chunky grey knit and ankle boots and think I look 'bang on trend' as opposed to 'really shouldn't at her age' Grin

No clanket, though, as that might be a step too far. Although I kind of want one if only to give me an excuse to say the word a lot.

CoconutAmericano · 23/10/2014 14:35

Loving the idea of a wooly hat with a big bobble. Where would i get one of these?

libertychick · 23/10/2014 14:49

Fruitbased I keep seeing it in the window of a Pure collection shop and it's styled with a oatmeal cashmere crew neck, looks very classy. I don't suit cream/gold unfortunately.

Similiar one in nude at Wallis. I like this look paired with a plan black sweater.

leedy · 23/10/2014 14:51

Sadly big roll necks don't work on me as I have a very short neck and basically look neckless in anything high-necked....

Stokey · 23/10/2014 15:13

I had a bobble hat like this last year Coconut beofre inevitably losing it on a tube. Here's a more conservative one

CoconutAmericano · 23/10/2014 15:19

Love both stokey particularly the first one

cressetmama · 23/10/2014 15:29

Cautionary note: I bought a clanket in lovely navy wool in TK Maxx and still haven't worn it, five years later.

But enjoying this thread. Leather leggings maybe a step too far at pushing 60, but the old leather jeans still fit, and it's clearly time to blow the dust off the faux fur handbag again. Got a lovely tartan scarf for DH's Xmas present last year, but his pile got too large, so re-allocated it to mine, with love from the dog!

Charitygirl1 · 23/10/2014 15:33

Agree with fur scarf - I am wearing mine from zara (linked on autumn HoC thread) a lot and getting compliments by the ton. They have a bigger version for £60 as well if that would suit you more. There are lots around as well as fur gilets.

MrPop · 23/10/2014 16:06

I love that hush hat, and I never knew I needed it til I saw it

Coconut - lovely coat and good discount.

A few inexpensive wool scarves at h&m

here
and here

I like these boots too

EmilyGilmore · 23/10/2014 16:12

Coconut I'm laughing at the woman modelling your coat at Cos. She's from the Whistles school of misery modelling. Lovely jacket but god the models are off-putting.

zombie models i call them! coat looks much better on a human i swear Wink

Notonaschoolnight · 23/10/2014 16:25

Navy and oxblood/claret seem to be the colors this season if that helps

Hopefully · 23/10/2014 17:25

So glad I started this thread. Have already nailed a couple of bits. Picked up these brown pleather leggings in H&M and a tartan scarf in zara.

Couldn't find a clanket (new favourite word) but will continue the hunt - I will not be dissuaded!

Tried on a sequin skirt in zara, but it was a-line, not pencil, and looked like a toddler party skirt, so I left it well alone.
