Remodelling a leather skirt - worth it?

I have a black leather skirt. It's very simple, ankle length, straight, 4 panels in the front and 4 in the back. The leather is beautiful, soft as butter. It's a size 16 and I'm now a size 10. I was thinking of getting it shortened and taken in, to make it a knee-length pencil skirt. But is it possible to have leather remodeled? I don't want to completely ruin it, I'd rather give it to someone, or a charity shop, and have it loved by someone else than have it destroyed by a bad job.
