Anyone spent ages growing their hair to then chop it?

I've been growing my hair for the last 2.5 years since I got engaged. Back then it was a very short assymetrical bob, so it took some growing out (DEFINITELY suits some length).
By my wedding last year it was about an inch below my shoulders, and since then I had a few big trims to get rid of dead ends, but it is now almost at my bra strap and growing very quickly because I am pg.
Finally where I want it. However I looked at it yesterday and realised it just hangs there- I hate tying it back, but it is very thick. It has started to tangle easily so I need to brush it several times a day. In the last week or 2 I have had to rip out 3 massive tats that no amount if detangling could fixConfused
Straightening/styling the back is starting to get too much it is continually getting caught in my handbag, etc.

I'm 31 and think maybe it looks too young and unprofessional? I'm starting a new job in a few weeks that requires looking slicker.

I already have a hair appointment for next week as I'd planned to balayage my hair anyway, so that and a cut is going to be quite a big change...

Can I go shorter without actually looking like I have short hair? I've been so focused on getting it as long as possible for so long!

Just try it a little shorter, nothing too drastic. It need not look unprofessional, long hair.

Sympathise with the hassle of styling the back!
