What does a 50 year old frump wear to a swanky nightclub?

We've just received an invitation to a birthday party at club; cocktails, dinner & dancing.
Am I right in thinking my usual cotton Boden shift won't be right? I haven't been to a club for years & haven't a clue.
What do the cool metropolitan set wear? Please don't make me mutton grin

I would wear a black dress. Glam up the make up.

Thanks MrsG I can do LBT. I so don't want to look like a hick from the sticks, which I am.

Def one block colour and try some really bright sandals high or low or silver , make sure your hair is gorgeous and don't worry too much about makeup but go for a stand out lipstick.

i am not sure this sounds right

Something simple.Easy!

I've got a red Coast crepe dress, would that do?
Or how about this

Love that black dress

SisterNancySinatra Thu 31-Jul-14 20:22:13

That dress is gorgeous, no need to look frumpy , I know loads of fifty something's who look far more amazing than they did at thirty.

ThatBloodyWoman Thu 31-Jul-14 20:24:00

That dress is perfect!

Orangeanddemons Thu 31-Jul-14 20:25:01

See I'm 50, and I never ever wear black. I think it's ageing and safe. Find a color that suits you and wear that

rhubarbcrumbleplease Thu 31-Jul-14 20:25:03

But what if I turn up dressed for a Christmas party & they're all in leather hot pants or whatever fashionistas wear these days?

MrsLettuce Thu 31-Jul-14 20:26:27

Both dresses sound lovely but probably a bit too formal, is somewhat provical to overdress for a night on the tiles TBH. What's your height, size and shape?

MrsLettuce Thu 31-Jul-14 20:26:52

yy, exactly, that's the risk with such a dress!

rhubarbcrumbleplease Thu 31-Jul-14 20:29:20

I'm 5'9", size 12. Minimal bust, middle-aged spare tyre, decent legs.
I have a gorgeous pair of tan, block heeled sandals.

SwedishEdith Thu 31-Jul-14 20:30:28

Can you ask someone else who is going what they're wearing so you can get a feel for the dress code? Someone who dresses well, of course. That dress, whilst lovely, does look very dressy and that might not be right?

SwedishEdith Thu 31-Jul-14 20:33:05

What is your colouring?

rhubarbcrumbleplease Thu 31-Jul-14 20:35:19

I don't know anyone else, it's a work mate of DH. I suspect most will be similar ages.
I've got brown highlighted hair & olive skin.

MrsLettuce Thu 31-Jul-14 20:36:35

v. simple shift. Lovely colour

Sandals sound great, could you link to them (or something like thwm)?

That dress is very short MrsLettuce, I've got a 35" inside leg and my knees are not attractive.

MrsLettuce Thu 31-Jul-14 20:43:01

LBD, sleeveless. Love this one

MrsLettuce Thu 31-Jul-14 20:43:57

Ooh yes, great sandals. Very similar to what the cos dress is styled with

rhubarbcrumbleplease Thu 31-Jul-14 20:45:20

That's lovely.

peasandlove Thu 31-Jul-14 20:58:34

Oh I disagree it looks very unflattering to me. You're on the right track op. Just wear something that suits you and you'll be fine. It's dark inside clubs ;)
