Highlights help

I had my highlights done just last week, before we went on holiday. Had a lovely time, but I did notice my roots seemed prominent - certainly more so than they should be for just a few days

Is it just a bad job, or is there a particular way I can ask my hairdresser to do them in future to avoid this? I had a full head by the way :)
