Like those sticks with tissue on to remove excess varnish? I've just had shellac done and she used her nails that we're cut into different sizes. It made me feel badly! Is this the norm?

That doesn't sound right. I am a beauty therapist. For hygiene reasons cotton buds or orange sticks with cotton wool on the end are used. Also a hoof stick for pushing cuticles, a cuticle knife & cuticle nippers are used.

Her nails? Her own nails? That doesn't sound right at all! I do my own nails as I used to work with someone who was also an manicurist so she showed me how to do them properly. I use orange sticks with cotton wool and a cuticle tool and clippers.

Shoddy practice, is she even qualified?

I guess so. It was one of those nail shops that are springing up everywhere. My nails look good but it can't be hygienic. They where like talons.

This industry needs regulation! It is up to everyone to check that the individual offering services such as manicures knows what they are doing. Do they check for health of the nail and skin? What do they use to sterilise their instruments and avoid cross infection and do you know that the products they are using are not harmful. I have seen the damage that can occur and it is not pretty. Beauty and Hair has training programmes and qualification structures and it is up to those who put themselves into a therapists / hairdressers hands to check that they will enjoy the process and not be risking their health.
