Rosacea / acne - at 42?!

I've had a patch (about the size of a 2p) on my cheek for a couple of months with one or 2 red spots, and quite a few little pimples. Thought it was a skin infection that would eventually clear up. It didn't, so went to GP yesterday and she said it was rosacea or acne. I've had blackheads / whiteheads over the years, but never really had anything like this. GP said there is nothing that can clear it apparently, she didn't seem bothered telling me that it "it can happen at any age, but it'll probably go by the time you're 50" and sent me off with a prescription for metrozine (gel I think to take the redness away - but obviously not to get rid of the spots).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not massively into my own appearance, but is that all I can do? Just apply some gel and wait for it to go in 8 years time??!! Its quite noticeable as I don't really wear much make up (tinted moisturiser) and thought if I tried to "cover" the spots with heavy make up, it would only make it worse.

I've never had a skin care routine - just wash with whatever is around, then apply a light moisturiser. I read up on it last night and I'm going to get one of the specialist cleansers (cetaphil or something) but can anyone give me any advice? Anything I can do myself to improve it or is it really something I just have to live with? If I try to cover it will it be worse?

Any advice gratefully received!

I use eucerin anti redness night cream which is brilliant,I use it in the day too. I'm on my second pot and I'm really noticing a difference.

My skin has improved hugely since I ditched sugar and over hauled my diet.

The gel might work well, give it a go.

I use bare minerals bisque concealer which works well.

There are quite a few threads about rosacea in S&B - if you do a search, you'll find a ton of recommendations for various skin care regimes, differing experiences with prescription treatments, dietary changes and so on.

The annoying thing about rosacea is that it seems to be different for everyone, and finding something that clears it up is a matter of trial and error, to an extent. For me, it's oxytetracyline tablets from the GP, finacea gel, and Avene anti-redness cream. Other people swear by Clinique/La Roche Posay/Liz Earle. YMMV!
