How come everyone else can wear a maxi dress

But me?

I've tried on loads today, they all make me look like fatter than normal, I'm a brick shape I think..wobbly tummy decent legs bingo arms.

Can anyone help me find one that might suit?

If you wear a maxi dress with a short jacket with 3/4 length sleeves and a long necklace it will make you look more proportioned.

Me too, Tiggy. I suspect it's because my thinnest bits are my ankles and it hides those and emphasizes my tummy and makes me look more block bloke than I actually am. IYSWIM.

Your premise regarding 'everyone' being able to wear one is incorrect imo - many people wear them but in most cases, even the taller, slimmer ladies still don't necessarily look at their best.

Maxi dresses also need to be slightly fitted and not just billow out around the body. They can be lovely but it does take some time and effort (I've tried and tried with them and in the end purchased a couple from Phase Eight)

Don't give up just take time to find one that suits you and as Big said, style the dress nicely

Its definitely about trying on loads and loads and finding one that suits. I'm a tall hourglass.

Bandeau maxis or those tee-shirt style ones look awful on me.

I need thick straps and a deep v-neck, and DEF not tight, but fitted at waist and then a gently flowy skirt bit.

Since I made that ;(very late) discovery last summer they're my new best friend.

I can't wear them - they look as though I am wearing a tent.

Have tried loads of different ones on - fitted type ones, baggy ones, thick straps, thin straps, no straps ,t shirt ones, plain, patterned, everything - all tent like.

Som looked better than others - but none looked particularly nice.

I only look ok in fitted jersey ones with a natural waistline and thick straps or capped sleeves. Billowy material, empire lines, halter neck, spaghetti straps, bandeau or those stupid elasticated waist ones look terrible on almost everybody and especially me.

Im an hour glass though so I wouldnt take too much notice of what I like.

Very few people can wear maxi dresses with success. I stick to long skirts and fitted t-shirt/vest tops.

If you have decent legs, go for a penicl skirt to show them off.

The empire line looks awful on me - I'm a tall thin hourglass. Sleeveless fitted scoop with an a line skirt looks good, as does a boxy top with slash neck, tied in the middle with a straight fitted skirt.

thank god you didn't buy a maxi dress OP - they are horrendous! the donning of maxi dresses at the fiest sign of summer is such a cliché!

Panzee Sat 14-Jun-14 14:25:20

Nobody else can.

FamiliesShareGerms Sat 14-Jun-14 14:37:55

I can't - they look like we are having a fight and the dress is succeeding in overpowering me...

motleymop Sat 14-Jun-14 14:45:55

Sorry about all the mad typos! But the maxi dress had its day a long time ago and should be banned.

BigRedBall Sat 14-Jun-14 15:21:04

motleymop well you're wrong. I don't think they've had their day at all. I have three and am always complimented by everyone when I wear them.

SilveryMoon Sat 14-Jun-14 15:26:50

Maxi dresses look awful on me. Have given up caring though. When I wear a maxi dress, I am not hot. And I get a seat on the bus blush wink

Nocomet Sat 14-Jun-14 15:27:38

I totally agree, walking down a British high street in a long dress just looks silly. They are for summer evenings in the med and casual summer parties and events in fields with beer tents.

Bandana maxi dresses are beach cover ups and should never be seen in the UK.

A nice summer dress or skirt from mid calf to as short as looks nice on your legs is far better.

FunkyBoldRibena Sat 14-Jun-14 15:40:35

I don't even know what a maxi dress is. Could one be worn to garden in?

Infinity8 Sat 14-Jun-14 20:08:14

Shorter drwsses are all very well but what if you have horrible legs?

I saw some lovely dresses being worn today as well as some monstrosities.

springbabydays Sat 14-Jun-14 20:11:17

Maxi dresses are all too long for me, sadly. I'm 5 foot 2. I don't want to have to wear massive heels for them to fit. It's such a shame.

JuniperTisane Sat 14-Jun-14 20:49:17

Should be banned? Banned? That is the daftest thing I've heard for a long time.

In that vein I would like to ban mustard yellow because I think its a hideous colour. Bananas because I don't like them. Pork, bidets, fake tan, TOWIE, double-decker buses, football, people from Swindon, Marmite, size 4 shoes, puppets and The Gruffalo.

So there.

motleymop Sat 14-Jun-14 20:51:15

grin Juniper! I agree with all of them except double-decker buses cos I quite like sitting at front on top deck!

motleymop Sat 14-Jun-14 20:58:47

Glad you understood the serious tone of my statement! I should like to add bar stools to the prohibited goods list.

JamJimJam Sat 14-Jun-14 21:08:40

I think if you're over a size 12 and 5'5" or less, you are likely to resemble a ship in full sail in a maxi dress.

JuniperTisane Sat 14-Jun-14 21:22:15

grin Ok buses reprieved, bar-stools in.

motleymop Sat 14-Jun-14 21:28:10

grin yay!
