Best way to lose 2/3 stone?

VanillaHoney · 20/04/2014 18:33

Have tried every diet under the sun... Usually manage to keep the weight of over the summer but it always creeps on over the winter... Only this year have put on more, a lot more actually. Need to motivate myself to lose 2/3 stone by July.

Don't eat meat but happy to eat fish.
Love pasta :-( and don't like "mini style" portions, so guess it is going to be painful in any event.

Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

The only diet that's ever worked for me is low carb (I followed the idiot proof diet by India knight).

It's not for everyone, but it is possible to do without eating meat (see the pig2twig.co.uk forums for menu ideas) - its basically protein and leafy veg mainly.

It's helped me both lose weight and get some medical issues more under control.

Low carb

Friends have done well on 5:2

trikken · 20/04/2014 19:15

I just upp my exercise and cut right out any snacking whatsoever. Making sure I have protein most meals otherwise I feel hungry quicker.

cheekygeeky · 20/04/2014 19:16

Vanilla I'm the same. Lose a stone in summer with healthy eating and exercise and then get depressed and stop exercising over winter and regain it all.

Shall we buddy up ? My plan for this week is 5:2 diet and walking 3 times for 40 minutes. Fancy joining me?

clary · 20/04/2014 19:17

5:2 has worked really well for me. Have gone from 11st 4 to 9st 11 in 5 mo - well actually I was at 9:11 in January so I have kept it off which has been the big thing.

If ever I feel I have been a bit of a pig (eg today Blush) I am on a fast day so that sorts it.

I have also really upped my exercise - I run or swim every day now.

TooTiredToBeCreative · 20/04/2014 19:19

I have lost almost 2 stone since Christmas. I have been logging all food & exercise on My Fitness Pal- sticking to 1200 calories and I have joined a gym. I was very unfit but started slowly and am now doing C25k- the NHS running app. I try to go to the gym 3 times a week.

I am not a great believer in diets which eliminate food groups completely. I think the old cliche of eat less, move more, is pretty much the way to go for steady weight loss which can be maintained! Good luck.

Twighlightsparkle · 20/04/2014 19:22

I've lost a stone and a half doing a few weeks on celebrity slim, it's low carb, 2 shakes a day and a low carb meal, oh and 2 snacks.

I didn't follow it completely, eg I'd have crackers with my cheese for a snack etc.

I only did it for 3 weeks initially because it doesn't sit comfortably with me. I want to do it by healthy eating but did it to give me a boost and a start.

I'm now doing low fat , low calorie but am going to do another week on celebrity slim to give me another boost

Wishiwashelenmirren · 20/04/2014 19:38

Another one who's only long term success has been with zero to lo carb, plus regular excercise, in my case couch to 5k.

I've yo yo'd all my life, and will always have a tendency to pile on the weight. Op have a read of the low carb and low carb bootcamp thread, very very good and lots of support from many others who sit with you on the bench. I personally preferred it to weight watchers and slimming world.

almondcakes · 20/04/2014 19:46

I lost two stone in three months with slimming world. I ate lots of pasta throughout.

almondcakes · 20/04/2014 20:01

I should also add that like you I don't eat meat. My neighbour also lost two stone in three months. I discussed it with her afterwards and she ate ptetty much the same as me, without joining SL - just made up the healthy eating plan herself from common sense. So you dpn't have tp join anything.

My sister lost 3 stones using the Jillian Michaels plan.

specialsubject · 20/04/2014 21:02

pasta is fine to eat. No sustainable eating plan bans any foods, you just need to be sensible about portions and eat fewer calories than you burn off.

you've proved diets are a waste of time.

you certainly can't lose 2 stone by July without starvation or amputation.

TheJumped · 20/04/2014 21:25

High protein, low carb.

Eggs for brekkie every morning. 2 or 3, whatever will keep you going til lunch. Handful of spinach underneath and cheese - grated or a cheese sauce - on top.

Fish and salad for lunch, with cheese and nuts if you want. Full fat Greek yoghurt, fruit.

Snack on nuts and fruit (no bananas)

Dinner - pasta or a low carb high protein meal if you can - but pasta or even pizza will be fine as long as you low carb it the rest of the day.

If you get hungry, up your protein and fat - I found Atkins chocolate fudge bars fab - full of protein and chocolatey and fill you up.

And loads of water! Good luck.

Pregnantagain7 · 20/04/2014 22:02

I can really recommend slimming world, I lost three and a half stone with it a couple of years ago after having my third baby and it stayed off (until I got pregnant again!)
It's basically a healthy eating plan there is very little weighing and measuring and you eat until you are full, you can also have alcohol and chocolate! Really doesn't feel like a diet.

Clarabum · 20/04/2014 22:08

Energy in < Energy out. Use My fitness pal. It's free and easy to use and no matter what way you dress up any of these diet plans, the only thing they are creating is a calorie deficit. That's the only thing that shifts weight. If you eat less that what you currently are then you will lose weight. I have tried every bloody diet going and the only ones that work is eating a fewer amount of calories. This whole "eat as much as you like" of insert food group here is all a gimmick in order to get you to eat less. Sure it'll work for a wee while but then you plateau and lose faith and pile it all back on again.
I also recommend Jillian Michaels 30 day Shred.

almondcakes · 20/04/2014 22:22

I think most diets are pretty similar. I have also used myfitnesspal (basically calorie counting) alongside slimming world but think calorie counting only works if you eat a healthy balanced diet - otherwise you end up feeling hungry and give up.

I eat - breakfast - eggs (in fry light), baked beans, cooked tomatoes.
Lunch - salad, beet root, peppadew, falafel (baked) or stew - carrots, parsnips, onions, leeks, peppers, swede plus stock.
Dinner- pasta with lots of veg, or noodles with lots of veg, or baked potato, salad and veg. sausages.
I also somewhere in that have 4 small slices of wholemeal bread and 2 portions of cheese or milk (there are various alternatives like nuts, cereal etc) and some raspberries or apples.

VanillaHoney · 20/04/2014 23:07

Thank you all.

I tried Dukan in the past. Problem was that i found it hard to stick to perhaps because I don't eat meat... Anyway, phase 1 went well but as soon as I started phase 2 the weight started coming back do switched to low calorie diet which worked well but was do hard to stick with, often so hungry wanted to eat the carpet!

In general, I don't think the problem is what I eat, it is portion sizes. I'm simply eating far to much :-(

Will try the low carb suggestion. Also does 5:2 mean not eating anything at all for 2 days?

Cheeky, yes would live to buddy up.

Slimming World is great for vegetarians and lovers of big portions, including pasta! Worth a try?

If you love pasta and big portions....sw is good. I've just lost my first stone and one to go. I don't feel like I'm on a diet.

I don't always stay for the meeting but the magazine motivates me.

BikeRunSki · 20/04/2014 23:17

SW worked for me.
3 stone off in 4 months
Still off 15 months later
I also don't eat meat, do eat fish, love a big pile of pasta!

Ruprekt - next Bootcamp starts on 5 May. Just saying ... Grin

AreYouFeelingLucky · 20/04/2014 23:32

I need to do this too. 2 stone by July.

I'm walking more than usual - aiming for half an hour or more every day, mainly by going for a walk after work. The big issue for me will be avoiding snacking. Even if I do a really good shop, there is a corner shop just a second from work and everyone piles in at 2pm when sugar levels crash. I need to stop that!

Easy. Cut out pasta and replace with high protein meals. Eg big salads with egg, chicken, seeds etc. Roast dinners are fine but use sweet potato instead of potato (tastes great and full of nutrients)

Sort of low carb. Pasta is the killer.
I love the stuff but ditched it five weeks ago and now weigh a stone less, I kid you not. I feel great and am not missing pasta!

Eat until you are full, otherwise you will be tempted to snack on sweet stuff.

Are u veggie or fish no.meat is just an attempt to be 'good'?
