Is it ok to wear cropped white leggings with tunic wraps - for curvy figure.

I know this may not be 'the look' this summer for many people. But is it better for people like me (who have unattractive legs) to wear some of the brighter summer colours/floral tunics and dresses with 3/4 leggings in white or black rather than be restricted to

maxi dresses - which apparently can make people just look like huge tents but the work for me if they have a twist or rucking round middle area and dont flare out.

Parallel trousers - I have black, white and blue mix. I just need to match up t-shirts.

I have got my summer sandals sorted comfy, dressy and daytime which is the easy bit.

I know tunics with leggings have been much derided on here, but I think if you're bigger, it can be a really flattering look. Much better than maxis that can so often make women look like a ship in full sail.

The leggings need to be thick enough that they don't go remotely transparent when stretched.

It can look good, IMO

friend wears denim tunic with white leggings, it works

I would go for slim jeans rather than leggings. White skinny jeans and a tunic are my go-to wedding etc outfit for the summer. (I don't do dressing up and I don't do legs in public Grin)

Tunics and leggings are miles better than 'shudder' maxi dresses if you're larger.

Oh thank you all.

I have seen the sneering (!) about tunics and leggings but the way I see it for me and my shape I feel it is a viable look. Havign said that even if i dropped two dress sizes it still would not improve my legs tbh.

Maxi dresses I love these. I like being able to throw them on and I feel quite feminim in them. BUT I will say I have tried a few different 'cuts' and 'silhouettes' and if you get it wrong you can look like a billowing washing line walking down the street. I'm happy with my current maxi dresses I'm 5'8, O always wear a cardi or denim jacket to balance it all out also - no wobbly flesh here.

Awfuldaughter Ive recently just bought my first pair of jeggings (just next) and I wer these with a longline top so I will have a look at those you have listed. I have some nude wedge heals, dressy flat blacks and block heal tan sandals plus three comfy ones birks etc.

For once Im looking forward to summer.

Second question: if anyone still reading....Should larger curvy figures be seen in patterns such as this seasons vibrant florals. Someone told me shoudnt wear pattern do you agree

Anyone should wear what they like, IMO.

If you like how they look on you, wear them!

Leggings and tunics are fine as are some maxis (some do tent but hey ho!guilty here lol)

But a big NO to the tube skirt suggestion!!!

Yes you can wear prints! In fact, prints break up a solid mass which can make you look smaller, but can do the opposite if you get the size of print wrong.Try a few on and see which ones are best

andsmile · 16/04/2014 11:06

Thanks fiscal and trip

yeah yeah to tube skirt - anything that indicates cling and not gentle skimming is a no no for me.

trip ive stuck to ditsy prints or ones where the colour is no high contrast or muted colours - i just dont think i can wear some of the more vibrant floral prints.

ok so I have seen these:

&parentCategoryRef=womensdresses&sort=manual&order=ascend

The first is available as a maxi. i have a new maxi from here with the twist at bust line (gives flatteringly) and the hang fairly straight down but not clinging on. Ive worn it this week with a denim jacket and really pleased DH even commented it looked nice.

The second dress - that colour is one of may faves as it really suits me and I would be wearing that with 3/4 white leggings.

I have found a site that just sells wool and cotton, has lots of style of cardigans and colours. So I will be teaming up with white cardigan and not sure about the other colours just yet.

I have the Camille wrap dress from fat face in several patterns. its long enough to wear without leggings/tights and I think looks better. I bet our legs are no way near as bad as you think.

Thanks wheres I have the Mikita maxi and there are a few other prints. Im just debating now....with a maxi you can step out without worrying about whether legs have just been shaved, one garment to wash and put on hanger.

Leggings have to be washed seperate and more prepped for - gawd talking self out of it now, but I do like that coral dress (an all the other colours actually Id wear them all, all of them I tel you!)

ah your link just took me to the page of dresses. the Makita maxi is lovely. I was looking at the chevron striped one on Saturday. The shorter length one is definitely long enough to wear without leggings.

What is Fat Face´s sizing like?

Report
WheresRyder · 16/04/2014 12:34

I'd say on the larger side. I'm a definite 12 in fat face but can be a 14 elsewhere.

Report
WildThong · 16/04/2014 12:39

There's a midi length dress on that link, looks interesting too. What's the thinking on midi?

sara I find them to be good. I have a Gillet from there and this is the first time I've bought a dress. I maybe think the jersey dresses are probably more forgiving than the shift type dresses. Im a size 18 hourglass and find they fit me in the right places. But I can see dress on the site that are straight - like the t-shirt dresses are probably not suited to me shape.

So I guess more towards the generous side...

I have worn it twice (2 short days) so have yet to wash it. I hope there isnt to much shrinkage (im away from home at moment)

Honestly? I don't think 3/4 length leggings are flattering to those with curvy figures / larger legs. They just seem to cut in the wrong place and make legs look worse - full length leggings IMO look fine.

andsmile I was a bit curious on this tunic and legging concept, so I did a bit of research this morning too. (I also have to go back and check my own wardrobe too. I have tried to do this in the past also.) This is what I find. I kind of figured out the rules a bit by looking at photos.

Tunic + leggings in theory can work for Pear/Apples/Hour glass.
chummabazzar.tumblr.com/post/20348737766/womenbodytypes

  • A tunic is almost like a straight shirt with no empire lines. This is different to a dress. You got to remember this. I think the Fat Face dress won't work as a tunic.
  • A tunic top needs to reach at, or just above the middle point between the knee and the hip, in order to make it work. (If petite, then at the actual point, but if taller than petite or Tall, then the point is above. See diagrams ?)
  • White leggings can only work if there is white also in the tunic. So it looks almost like a one piece clothing.
  • Most tunics are one uniform colour. Or of a uniformed pattern which also gives the effect of a whole uniformed area. Asymmetrical patterns may not work as tops, but then I think most shops won't sell these kind of tops anyway. So you should be okay.

Looks ok. Uniform top. At or above mid-point between knee and hip.

These are the ones that break the rules. I think they are wearing dresses and not a proper tunic top. A tunic top or an overall long shirt or jumper should have a straight structured side. No belts. These have a squeeze at the empire line or at the hip line. That is why they are not working for me I think. It looks unsymmetrical to the eye.

Okie doke. Now I just have to go and rearrange or throw away my own stuff too. Smile

Thank you all for the inputs too. I really like how everyone has given good ideas.

I didn't think I can do the summer option as well, but the lady with the white leggings and the bold blue print made it work.

Tunics are not all straight,if they were most couldn't wear them.'tunic' is more of a generic term these days for a dress type top

You could be right there when I think about it. Some are a little bit scrunched bu not too much and then the side is at an angle.

I was wondering about the dress top thing. Because I started to take measurements. It must be longer than a top/shirt, but shorter than a dress. Dress normally hit the knee level doesn't it ? An inch above or below. I got caught out as well when I bought some clothing for my cousin's little girl and I couldn't figure out the difference between a dress and a top. I slowly figured why some of my "tops" is longer but not a dress. I had some long T-shirts which threw me a little bit, because I didn't know how to wear them. I am also short (5'2) as well, so this didn't help with the sizing thing. e.g. a normal 12 is like a long dress for me etc.

Tunics can be wrap style, empire line, all sorts. As said,it's more of a generic term these days for longer tops/dress style tops.

Dresses come in various lengths not to the knee.Tunics are generally too short to wear as a day dress without leggings or skinnies underneath, some can get away with it though.

I wouldn't think about it so much tbh

Calf length leggings are unflattering. Wear ankle length. And I can't see white leggings ever looking good if you are over a size 8. I wouldn't wear white leggings and I'm a size 16 with relatively slim legs.
