I'm hoping you lovely ladies can help

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/231099661890?hlpht=true&ops=true&viphx=1&lpid=95&device=t&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=95

This is a link to the dress I've bought
It says that it needs a 20'' petticoat, but that seems short to me

What do you think?
Can you recommend the best place to buy a petticoat?

Nice dress :)

Mine was from amazon. They might have said just 20 inch so the petticoat is not seen. If you want it to be seen then get a longer one.

I have this one and you can see it under my dress.

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00847LZK0/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr3_1?qid=1397420343&sr=8-1-fkmr3&pi=AC_SX110_SY165&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

Some are scratchy if you don't have the underskirt part.

I didn't know if a 23" would be better, not quite sure

Should the petticoat have a certain number of layers, or doesn't it matter?

i've got a 23" petticoat that I wear with a similar length dress, it just pokes out of the bottom slightly. Layers don't matter, it's the net material that makes it poke out. Agree with the underskirt tip though!

MrsMeow · 14/04/2014 15:36

The material makes it stick out I mean - as in volume.

MrsMeow where did you get your petticoat from? How many layers does it have. There seems to be so many out there and the price range is pretty big.

im not sure if i want it to be seen too much, but then again I don't want it too short and looking silly.

I got mine off ebay, think it was £10 + p&p? I can't check the layers as it's packed away at the minute but from memory I think there was 5 or 6 inc the shorter underskirt bit? It gave a nice shape to the dress but wasnt too much if that manes sense?

Sorry, just realised it was 25" - 23" was the one that the site I bought my dress off recommended but I wanted it to show underneath my dress so I went for longer figuring that I could roll it over at the top if it was too long. It looked fine though.

this is the one I bought.

if the petticoat is too short yoou end up with the dress being the shape of a lampshade so better to poke out a bit than be too short.

So would you say a 23"petticoat would be best even though the link says a 20"?

Hmm looking at these is that the length of the actual net bit or the length of the whole thing as that seems very short to me. Mine would be 27" from waist to just below knee so total length. I'm 5'9 and that sits just below dress length and just below my knee.
I find that 6 layers gives the best sort of shape if you want to go for the full 50's shape.

And it may be worth a look at amazon. That dress can be found for £10 less with free postage on there.

I thought it seemed really short too youmakemydreams

Thank you for the Amazon suggestion, I'll take a look there now.

So would you suggest Mae a longer 26"?

I got mine from soho clothing online. It is wonderful as its soft so doesn't scratch bare legs and snag tights . It is really full as well .

I would think 26" would be a better length roo short and as dita said better poking out a bit than the lampshade look.
I love that dress too by the way. Am wearing one to a wedding in July with a bright contrasting petticoat underneath.

Youmakemydreams, I'm struggling with which colour to get the dress in. Am thinking the dark purple one. Would you go for a totally different colour petticoat?

My shoes are a cream colour, by the way.

Also, could you link to the one on Amazon. I've had a look but can't find one that is cheaper.

Also, whilst here, where do you get your petticoats from. Sounds like you're an expert Smile

I have this dress and it's lovely. I think my petticoat is 23". I always get compliments from people when I wear it. I'm 5ft 10 and it sits on my knee.

different colours are different prices

There are more at the £22.99 sort of price I'll have a better rake around.

I love different coloured petticoats underneath. I'm getting married next year and am undecided between red or pink. Bm's are wearing navy dresses with the colour of their choice petticoats underneath.

Haha no expert really. My first petticoat was an original from my mum. I have bought from ebay, etsy and amazon. My friend just found a pin on pinterest to make my own but not sure if I'm brave enough yet.

Thank you youmakemydreams, love the colour of that dress you linked to. Didn't think of a raspberry colour, but that's lovely.

What colour petticoat would you choose?

Ooh I'm probably the last person to ask to colour co-ordinate.
I've actually been pondering and looking at petticoats and for me they are an accessory so would pick something a bit clashing usually.

I would possibly put it with a lighter but not baby pink, purple or navy if I wanted a bit less clash but I would equally choose a bright or lime green under it too. Especially with cream shoes you can have anything then.
