Should I buy this Hobbs coat and if so how do the sizes come up?

I absolutely adore this trench coat in green. I'm a true pear shape so I'm thinking that it'll be flattering as the belt pulls it in at the waist and then the bottom half is A-line.

I first saw it reviewed here, second coat down and thought the journalist looked fab in it.

BUT!! Look at the price, so expensive. Is it worth it?! Will it last? Will it date?!

If you decree it to pass the MN jury, then what size shall I buy (I've never bought in Hobbs before.)? I'm sort of a large 10, my arse is definitely a 12 grin

It's lovely. Hobbs come up quite big, I'm usually 14 but can take a 12 in hobbs

noodleone Sun 01-Dec-13 09:02:14

I love hobbs and have a long black coat that I have worn since 2006 so definitely worth the money. I saw this coat yesterday and the wool fabric is quite rough, otherwise I would have really liked it, the colour is perfect.

I think you would probably be a 10 too

ClaudiusMaximus Sun 01-Dec-13 09:05:47

Ooh, I'm being enabled, excellent!! grin

noodle, what kind of green is it, a deep olive/sage green or a brighter pine/bottle green?

Pagwatch Sun 01-Dec-13 09:10:58

You know it's reduced at the moment, don't you.
They have reductions on all current stock.
It's about £200.

I find Hobbs generous sizing usually.

ClaudiusMaximus Sun 01-Dec-13 09:12:47

Yeah, it's £279 down to £204... still 200 quid though which is a lot of money!!

Looks like I should get the 10....

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Sun 01-Dec-13 09:14:20

I thinkit's nice enough, but, to me, anythng mid-calf lengt like that loks frumpy and aging. You'd find something much more flattering at Karen Millen or Reiss (probablymorf expensive but to give you an idea of a more flattering length.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Sun 01-Dec-13 09:16:06

Sorry typing's a nightmare since iphone upgrade!

Curioustiger Sun 01-Dec-13 09:21:33

I agree Hobbs comes up very big. It's a beautiful coat!

Pagwatch Sun 01-Dec-13 09:24:41

Okay. Just trying to help. I'm a five minute walk from Hobbs so I could have tried it on for you but I am clearly annoying!!

<buggers off>>

ClaudiusMaximus Sun 01-Dec-13 09:31:53

Huh? Who said anything about annoying? Was that aimed at me? Hope not, I name changed yesterday but I'm a big fan of ya Pag and didn't mean to come across as ungrateful! Promise smile

If you would like to try it on then I would be very interested to hear what you think of it and if you think it'll make my enormous arse look any smaller.

ClaudiusMaximus Sun 01-Dec-13 09:33:28

Frumpy and ageing? I was hoping it would transform me, swan like, into an elegant lady channelling a 40s vice...

ClaudiusMaximus Sun 01-Dec-13 09:34:17

Oh dear god, a 40s VIBE, not vice, I have enough of those already (hence the lardy arse)

Specialbrew Sun 01-Dec-13 09:41:28

Buy it! Looks like a great colour, and would look as good open.

I'm 5 2" so it would probably hit my ankles, but would good on taller women.

I've just ordered this from Hobbs. I'm a size 8 and have ordered the 8. Whch isn't much help with your sizing question

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Sun 01-Dec-13 09:41:33

Oh dear this thread's gone a bit weird. Sorry op - just my opinion on the length; I used to wear longer length skirts a lot and now realise it was frumpy and ageing on me.
I didn't see you showing any irritation, btw; maybe the other poster thought my miserable contribution was you.

Specialbrew Sun 01-Dec-13 09:46:45

I disagree on the ageing and frumpy comment. I think that most items of clothing can be made to look like that if not worn properly.

ClaudiusMaximus Sun 01-Dec-13 09:51:12

No, I totally see your point Shotgun. Actually you got me thinking about it, it's the type of length my mum has always worn (and she's now in her 60s). That said, she has always been very elegant so I was hoping that it could imbue a sort of classic style, and also the extra length might offer a bit more warmth, especially if I have a knee length skirt on underneath.

Specialbrew that coat is lovely too. However I really love the green colour of the Persephone, it's so unusual!

So, I think I am going to go for it, in the 10, before I change my mind... smile

Pinupgirl Sun 01-Dec-13 09:54:38

That coat is beautiful!-buy it.

tethersend Sun 01-Dec-13 09:59:27

Definitely buy it.

ClaudiusMaximus Sun 01-Dec-13 10:12:00

Tis bought!!! grin

Tell all, I need details.

hollyisalovelyname Sun 01-Dec-13 10:22:53

The Daily Mail journalist didn't look a size 12 in the photos.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Sun 01-Dec-13 10:27:10

I expect she's an m&s 12 rather than a Zara/Topshop 12 - but let's not open that can of worms! grin.

ClaudiusMaximus Sun 01-Dec-13 10:32:24

Do you think she's a 12/14 rather than a 10/12? I thought she was the latter, hmm, maybe I am deluding myself about my real size!!

I will definitely update once it arrives.

ClaudiusMaximus Sun 01-Dec-13 16:28:11

I wish Pagwatch had tried it on...
