Length of skirts as you get older?

I am wondering if I can still get away with short skirts now I'm a mum and 33. I have a few great skirts I wear in the winter with woolly tights, ankle boots and a sweater but I've got them out this winter (the first winter I'm back to preDC weight) and I wonder if I am too old for them now?

My legs are my best bit really, despite being short I'm a size 8 so reasonably in proportion. My favourite skirt is just above the half wway mark between crotch and knee, so pretty short. Am I too old for that now?

Be honest, I can take it Grin

I am year younger than you (though not a mum, not that that's relevant!) and wear short skirts and dresses - am a shortish size 8 like you. I always wear them with opaque tights, everything else covered up, and it doesn't look remotely tarty or too 'young'. I think it does depend a bit on your shape and overall style - if I was a curvy hourglass in tight clothes maybe it would look too sexy, but I'm not and it doesn't.

Definitely wear it.

There is no such thing as too old, wear what makes you happy Smile

If it helps I am older than you and wear the look you describe all the time, only with much shorter skirts Grin

And by 'too sexy' I mean too sexy for work - people can look as sexy as they like outside work Grin

I am a short size 10. Today I am wearing a red 19 inch long skirt, skater style, with black opaques and a little black and red sweater. I think I look fine, and for me, its the opaques that allow me to get away with it. I'm 38 btw.

If you're a size 8 with good legs, I don't think you should think twice about it!

Def wear short skirts esp if your legs are your best bit! Short skirts look better with flat shoes and opaque tights, and there's the old adage - if legs are on show cover up the cleavage and vice versa. You'll look great - go for it!

Of course you can wear them. My skirts have actually got shorter as I've got older. I've recently lost a couple of stone, and now feel confident in wearing skirts above my knee (though hardly short), with opaque tights and either boots or wedge heels. I always used to wear mid calf swirly skirts (IYSWIM) with boots.

Legs are the last body part to go IMO... There are seventy year olds out there with fabulous legs, look at Cilla Black. I would definitely keep wearing a short skirt if they suit your shape.

Upper arms on the other hand start to go from your 20s unless you are Michelle Obama!

Grin 33? Size 8 with good legs? Honey, you can wear anthing you please! If anyone in real life tells you any different they are just jealous.

Thanks all, I'll get them washed and ironed and back in rotation then. I always stick to the 'if legs are on show cover up the cleavage and vice versa' rule anyway, mostly because I've got no boobs or cleavage to show anyway Hmm

I'll wear them with a slim fit, but not skin tight at all, cable knit top or that sort of thing. My ankle boots have a very small heel on them, only about an inch so I think they'll be ok.

Marylou You are too kind! Sadly you're wrong, I can easily look like a dogs dinner though Grin

Good grief, I thought you were going to say you were 65. If your legs are in good shape then keep on wearing them short. I'm in my fifties and I really regret all those years I spent in jeans and trousers when I had legs to kill for.

33 is not old FFS. If you've got the legs, wear the skirt.

stop wishing your life away.

good god woman I've got clothes older than you - (which I bought as an adult!)

I have fab legs, if I say so myself, and often wear short skirts with woolly tights or leggings. Mind you, I have had the advantage of brutally honest teenagers to put me right over some fashion choices!

I'm sure as my DC get older they will be very honest! In the meantime I can ask MN Grin

I hope not!

I'm 35, size 10 and my legs are my best bit. I wear shortish skirts with opaque tights and fitted jumpers, I don't think I look tarty. I'm sure my 11yo DS would tell me if I did Grin

Well I'm older than you and still have short skirts! What doez being a Mum have to do with it? Have you been chatting to Johnny Boden?

I'm ten years older and two sizes bigger than you, and I still wear skirts/shorts up to mid thigh. I intend to carry on doing so, too! Opaques and boots make it all easier and less slapper-ish.

I'm older than you, also size 8, and although I still wear short skirts I sometimes wonder if my face is too old for my body...

I decided when I was about 33 that I was too old for really short skirts. Then I realised that my legs are better than half the 20 year olds you see walking around in micro-minis, leggings and super skinnies and decided to wear what the fuck I wanted and enjoy looking good. I think you definitely need to keep your tights on the very opaque side- I go for 100 denier- and stick to the rule about short skirt or low cut but not both, but other than that you should go for it.

YY re not doing short skirt and low cut top. Then again, I never, ever do low cut top anyway tbh.

Blimey, I'm 48 and my legs are my best bit. Short skirts with opaque tights all autumn, winter and spring. Unfortunately they aren't good enough to be seen in the summer, with no tights, but that's a different problem.

I'm older than you and bigger than you, yet I've just bought some mini skirts

I have decent legs from running, my tights are thicker than some leggings and I like the skirts! That's good enough for meGrin

Today I wore a very short dress which is slightly above midway between knee and crotch. With opaque thick black tights and checked Vans shoes, and fitted double breasted jacket. I am 26yo, size 10, yet still got glares from a few women on the school run,who are around early forties. I wish they would wear whatever they want too then maybe they would be happier. I literally only had my wrists and face on show, yet obviously I am supposed to hide my figure they can fuck off
