Is 40 too old to wear a string bikini?

I'm slim (very small-boned)but with a bit of hip flab due to doing no exercise whatsoever and ageing, obviously! So the string sides of the bottoms don't look too good at the moment. Should I just take it back or try to tone up my waist and hips - I've got less than 3 weeks before my hols?

Wear it. Make the most, 40 is young!

No. I'm 39 and have got a few years of wearing them yet.

Although I've invested in a sturdier bikini for the sea as my young dc's do tend to need carrying or grab at me Hmm.

Ok, I'll keep it! It's just that the only photos you tend to see of people wearin them are "celebs" in their 20s who look like they need a good meal or else do 50 sit-ups a day!

It shows my belly stretch marks too, though. And I am white as anything. Flabby, untoned, stretch-marked white belly with no bum or boobs and stick legs - are you really sure it'll be ok?? Would fake tan help it look a bit better?

What about that body lotion with mild fake tan in it - might help you to feel less self-conscious without looking orangeGrin

BigTillyMint: I've tried that and go a sort of "parchment" colour. Have never tried proper fake tan - I guess I would be the first person to actually get paler on holiday if I put it on before I went!!

What about sunbathing in your garden/the park? I've already got quite a tan from just being outside (admittedly not on my flubby belly as it's thankfully covered by my clothes!

I don't tan that easily though and wouldn't want to scare the neighbours whilst trying. Grin

I am boring myself with my own excuses now though so am just going to forget about what it looks like and just enjoy myself on hol! If others can do it at my age then so can I!

Thanks for all the encouragement, ladies!

Definitely go for it. I am convinced that bigger bikini bottoms only make you look bigger so embrace the half covered cheek look - I do :)

Nah. Not too old at all.

If you are feeling too pale try a home self tan in an aerosol. I find them pretty easy to use. Go for less rather than more though. You can always add, not so easy to remove.

I personally wouldn't fake tan first. I would find it virtually impossible to cover my entire body evenly and mine always fades at different rates on different parts of my body. So you might have to face the beach with patchy bits which would be worse in my opinion.

Honestly I don't think anyone really notices anyone else on the beach anyway. It's always horrible unveiling yourself on the beach for the first time each year but then look around and you will see all ages, shapes and sizes just getting on with it and no one bats and eyelid.

Have a lovely holiday!

I'm nearer fifty than forty and I love my bikini's!

I use a gradual tan and that gives me confidence on the first few days of wearing a bikini before I get a bit of natural colour!

I'm 42 and I ware bikinis, I do not think I look good in them but I can not cope with layers in the heat. I'm slim but very pale and always feel self conscious on the first day but then the holiday kicks in and I could not give a toss. Yes I would love to look like a sex kitten in one but I don't.

You may be self conscious, but very few people notice.... And those that notice are not worth worrying about!!

Wear it and embrace your paleness too, you will look great. Do the Shred for a few weeks if you want to tone up, it does work really fast.
