give the 14 year old you one piece of beauty advice what would it be ?

Mine would be - always use a moisturiser with a SPF.

Told this little gem to my DD at the weekend and I thought there's got to be some other ones I'm missing and thought "I know who to ask".... over to you now S and B Ladies smile

Don't die your hair black and watch out, grandma becomes a bit of a feeder when she retires.

Use antibiotics like Minocin to get rid of acne rather than faffing about with different creams and health tips forever. Just go to the doctor and get him prescribe it. Don't just wait for acne to fade away in time...

Yes, sunlight helps with zits but do make sure you use a water-based suncream if you want to avoid lobster looks.

Pick clothes that match your colouring, in my case sort of stone coloured, khaki stuff, not blues or reds.

Oh and one more... Don't worry that you don't go brown, stay out of the sun and when u r 47, you'll look ten years younger than all those bronzed sun worshippers!!

Scarletohello Wed 19-Jun-13 16:50:05

Get your colours done ( black doesn't suit you and it doesn't make you look slim either )

Accept that you have wavy frizzy hair, huge boobs and find ways to work with them

Oh, and as a former brunette ( now blonde due to having grey hair), its true, blondes DO have more fun...!

I wish that I could go back in time and hug my 14 year old self and tell her (me?) that everything was going to be alright

Please can I do more than one:

1) The only way to have nice, shiny, healthy hair is to leave it alone. Don't use heat tongs, dryers or irons. Use lots of oil on your hair.

2) Look after your teeth and it's OK to have cosmetic dentistry if it's subtle. I think a nice smile is worth a million pounds spent on makeup.

3) Look after your skin. Stay out of the sun, use eye cream and SPF. Don't sun bathe. It's ruins your skin.

4) Only pluck your eyebrows in the middle and a bit under the outer edge to tidy up. Liza Eldridge is right about not plucking. Thin, non existent eyebrows are the quickest way to look 10 years older once you hit 40.

5) Don't waste loads of money on fashion and makeup. Instead spend that money on improving what's under all that. Go to the gym, have facials and look after your health.

6) Don't reinvent yourself, be grateful for what you have and be the best version of yourself, not what you think is in fashion or how everyone else looks. One of the saddest things I have ever seen is a friend of mine reinvent herself. At 16 she was a stunning, natural beauty. She looked like a young Rita Hayworth. She didn't like having browny red hair so dyed it platinum, went on a sun bed for the next 20 years and wears loads of makeup.

Sun block always on the face, throat and backs of hands. Then fake tan. Factor 30 for the rest.

Try to forget what you look like. Mascara and lip gloss is really enough for youth.

Keep everything simple. Keep some things to the imagination. There is no rush.

Then enjoy yourself and forget how you look.

@ smellylittleorange <<There are more shades of lipstick out there apart from Rimmel's Black Cherry and Heather Shimmer.>> Ha ha! that really takes me back - I can picture both of those in fact I think I may still have the Heather Shimmer somewhere

Did you have the Boots 17 green and mauve eyeshadows too?

Amazinggg Tue 18-Jun-13 20:56:00

You are gorgeous, really genuinely so. You don't attract male attention because of your brain, you fool, they don't give a shite about that. So look after yourself and don't sleep with the first prick who compliments you.

And please be gentle to your skin, keep it clean, wash and moisturise twice a day and go to a doctor for harsh drugs to get rid of the acne. It will revolutionise how you see yourself.

And just... Dunno. Believe you're worth it, or summat.

Jux Tue 18-Jun-13 20:42:42

To my 14 yo self - actually you're pretty bloody lovely as you are so believe in yourself (and you're not fat either).

That'll do.

I wouldn't have believed me though grin

Fillyjonk75 Tue 18-Jun-13 20:27:15

I think the main message would be to tell my teenage self I was not fat but just to get a decent sports bra and trainers and start running earlier than 21 and how to do it. Also to chill the fuck out. Boys do like you.

Actually my mum said most of these things, my dad tried to take me running so it would probably have made not one jot of difference!

My mum took me to a pamper evening at 13 and from then on I was pretty hot on the old cleanse, tone and moisturise.

MiauMau Tue 18-Jun-13 18:28:42

Stop worrying about what other people think of you, being different is good and they are as insecure as you.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Tue 18-Jun-13 17:21:36

Bra size - don't assume that your boobs getting bigger = a bigger band size. Don't be shy and get measured! You are a 30g not a 36c.

And don't wear your aunty's hand-me-down bras.

AKiss same here!

Get your bra properly fitted, girl, instead of just jigging around in the changing room.

However, your plucked out eyebrows will return (and a better shape), and well done for persisting with the GP to sort out your acne. By 25 you'll have given up daily foundation.

dontyouwantmebaby Tue 18-Jun-13 16:00:53

My beauty advice would be to: wear what you like and feel comfortable with and don't stress about what other people think. Be yourself and don't feel you have to conform.

(however if you want to conform, that's fine too) smile

I'd also say remember you are young enough to get away with anything, ANYTHING! outrageous colours/glitters/metallics that (on me anyway) doesn't quite look right when you get to forty something. wink

My 14 year old self would be disgusted at the boring conformist I have become. I was planning to be a goth forever.

Never start shaving your legs - if you start waxing/epilating the hair will get finer and you won't feel like an ape anymore. Stop worrying about your hairy arms ... Nobody notices.
Ignore your brother ... You do not have a fat arse so you don't need to wear long jumpers all the time.
Don't try to save money by getting your hair permed at the same place your Nan goes. And don't cut your long hair off just to piss your mum off.
Oh... And please go to university instead of getting married at 18!

YoniTime Tue 18-Jun-13 15:12:01

I thought the darkening hair was an age thing!

OliviaMMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 18-Jun-13 15:04:23

I may have gone natural?
I dunno
But the hairs that are there now are nothing like the ones before.

BerryBlast Tue 18-Jun-13 14:41:57

LaQueen we had a windbreak that was silver on the one side and I would sunbathe with that facing me, so to reflect the sun on to my face, which was coated in oil (baby oil blush ). If you've seen the film "Something About Mary" you'll know what I mean.

I wish I had learnt to sleep on my back and not on my side - with one side of my face "squished" into the pillow. This has resulted in one side of my face, especially around the eye, being a lot more creased that the other side !

Lonelynessie Tue 18-Jun-13 14:31:50

Do not cut a fringe in, just back away from the scissors shock

YoniTime Tue 18-Jun-13 14:29:48

With the don't shave your legs message, do you mean "go natural" or remove the hair in some other way?

Jelly15 Tue 18-Jun-13 14:26:06

Stay, or get to and stay in a healthy weight range and never yo yo diet, your skin won't snap back when you are 40 and lose weight, also learn to love excercise.

curryeater Tue 18-Jun-13 14:24:31

Don't diet. It never ends. 8.5 stone is fine.

Cocodale Tue 18-Jun-13 14:22:53

Deal with facial hair as soon as possible, wish Id had the means to do that earlier.
