Going without deodorant/anti-persp irant

I haven't worn deodorant for the last 8 years or so, not since I was a teenager. And I still have friends grin though none of them know I don't wear it. I wear a little perfume every day, but that's it.

I was interested to find out that there's a sizeable minority of the UK population who don't sweat/emit much odor at all (there's a link with having dry earwax too...and having East Asian ancestry, though I can't relate to the latter) and so deodorant products are wasted on them. IMO, the thought of putting on all those chemicals unnecessarily makes me a bit uneasy.

Do any of you not wear deodorant or anti-perspirant either? Would be interested to hear what you think (even if you think the idea of going without is gross!)

I need it. But dp could probably have a very manual job and not bath for a month and still not need deodorant. It's actually a little insane how he doesn't need it.

He has piles of lynx gift boxes he has never had use of!

I don't use anti-perspirant, as I think we're meant to sweat. But I do use deodorant most of the time.

I've recently stopped wearing any, (am trying to cut down on unnecessary chemical use) and to be honest I don't think it's made too much difference although I did notice a very slight whiff (when I'm craning my neck round and getting my nose as close to my underarms as possible!) when we had those very hot days a few weeks ago. I'm happy to go without most of the time now though unless I'm at a wedding/function etc where I'm all dressed up and want to feel my best, in which case I use a roll on.

Oh, and I do have goopy earwax

thingamajig Sun 16-Jun-13 22:18:07

I never wear deodorant. I don't think I smell, neither does anyone else. I own some, but only use it if I haven't showered that day (i.e. never). I'm not generally sweaty, though I do sweat quite a bit when I exercise hard - as I shower before I have a chance to smell I don’t mind.
On the rare day that I do use it I am assaulted by the smell of deo every time I move - mine is a very innocuous aloe vera sensitive thing - I hate it, so artificial and chemically.

Still confused, but also off to bed. Shall cotton bud my ears in the morning and consider...

mooface Sun 16-Jun-13 22:13:28

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom - I just have little yellow flakes, so it must be dry...maybe...

Jidget Sun 16-Jun-13 22:10:32

I don't seem to produce any earwax and I don't sweat much at all.

I have very little underarm hair (don't know if this is connected?) but I do use deodorant 'just in case'.

Binks, Sure (silver can) deo smells nice and fresh.

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom Sun 16-Jun-13 22:09:44

So dry is what, a little bit that will stick to a cotton bud? I am still confused confused. I know I don't get much ear wax, and have a very sweaty forehead but not elsewhere. I wonder where that puts me grin

mooface Sun 16-Jun-13 22:08:05

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom - I found out how when my DP ended up with a glob of sticky, dark brown earwax in his ear after a flight...ergh...I've never seen anything like that come out of my own ears!!

BinksToEnlightenment Sun 16-Jun-13 22:05:06

I don't sweat very much at all, but I prefer to have a little tiny spritz of it. It is awkward finding one that doesn't smell worse than sweat though.

FreakoidOrganisoid Sun 16-Jun-13 21:54:09

Some people don't need to. I most definitely do. Ishower twice a day and wear a 72 hour antiperspirant and still smell by thr time it gets to my evening shower. A normal antiperspirant lasts me a couple of hours maxsad

Fraxinus Sun 16-Jun-13 21:53:07

Depends on the weather. Although I get out of the habit in winter, but sometimes the central heating at work is a bit much.

Also I find wool and cotton clothes make me smell less than acrylic.

One roll on or stick will last me at least a year.

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom Sun 16-Jun-13 21:52:24

How do you know whether your ear wax is dry or wet?

ivykaty44 Sun 16-Jun-13 21:50:38

I usually shower once/twice a day and probably wear deodorant once every three days on average - thats really as i forget to apply.

I hate spray deodorant and will only use roll on

BriansBrain Sun 16-Jun-13 21:48:01

I shower every day (can't wake up properly without a shower)!and still need to wear deo.

I even have a can in my draw at work, I wonder if its to do with the material I wear? I do do a lot of rushing about as well though.

TallulahBetty Sun 16-Jun-13 21:47:57

I need to wear it, and shower, every day. DH can get away with it, he barely sweats at all, let alone enough to smell envy

Aetae Sun 16-Jun-13 21:44:53

DH doesn't wear deodorant because he doesn't smell, AND he has dry earwax. I never knew there was a link! He's not Asian though.

I, on the other hand, have wet earwax and I couldn't go without deodorant...

BackforGood Sun 16-Jun-13 21:43:34

I do wear it, but I often think this on the "How often do you shower / bath?" threads, with people getting their knickers in a twist about those who don't need to shower every day. I genuinely think people must have different "sweaty-nesses". There is only a tiny, tiny minority of the population that actually smell unpleasant, but many, many people don't shower or bath more than a couple of times a week.

SwedishEdith Sun 16-Jun-13 21:39:38

I had a friend who didn't wear any as didn't believe she needed to...but she definitely did whiff when it was warm

mrspaddy Sun 16-Jun-13 21:39:29

I couldn't be without it and always have an extra can in my car/handbag. My husband doesn't - showers a lot (first thing/when he gets in from work etc). He prefers not to put chemicals on his skin but does if he knows he will be out all day/evening like a wedding function etc.

Llareggub Sun 16-Jun-13 21:34:35

My boyfriend doesn't wear any and never smells. I couldn't go without it at all.

christinarossetti Sun 16-Jun-13 21:23:47

I only think of wearing deodorant if I'm working, just in case it's a hot room.

But if I forget, it's no big deal.

I don't sweat very much though. I would wear it more if I did.

Mintyy Sun 16-Jun-13 21:20:09

Not all nationalities have the same number of sweat glands/propensity to sweat. IIrc asian people from the Far East ( like China, Japan etc) sweat less.

joanofarchitrave Sun 16-Jun-13 21:20:08

I'm quite stinky so prefer to wear it, but dh doesn't.
