Jersey skirts and dresses - yes or no?

What do you think? I've ordered some jersey dresses from The White Company, Me+Em and one from boden and I'm a cautious fan. Am I mad? Does jersey generally look naicely chic or just frumpy and mumsy?.

Links needed! Grin

Which Boden dress?

Personally i like a bit of jersey. It's comfortable and practical and can look smashing.

The me and em jersey dresses are fab. I've got two martini ones from last year and have worn them every week , they wash well and still look immaculate. I've got my eye on a couple when they are in the sale.

I love them, but so much depends on the cut and thickness as to whether they are flattering.

You don't want it clinging anywhere lumpy. And thicker material is better from the hanging well and lumpiness point of view.

Watch out for stupid design details like interior side pockets on the hips (why??? White Company, I'm looking at you) as these will spoil the line and exacerbate lumps.

maxi dress

banded empire short

curved waistband

ruched maxi T

fit + flare

the shameful boden one I actually look ok in this but I know it's frumpy.

I'm 27 ffs. I've been pregnant or breastfeeding for almost THREE YEARS and I have no idea what the fuck to wear anymore especially as summer was SO hot (in Sydney). I'm hoping jersey dresses will be my saviour but I don't want to look shit.

Ok well how tall are you? Personally I like all the short ones inc the Boden one - did you get it in black? I think you need to be tall for the White company maxi one and the other maxi is hideous - and looks like a faff to wear which defies the point of jersey. I particularly like the short blue white company one.

I heart your me and em maxi dress. A star.

I'm just under 5'6''

I got the boden one in black and navy and marine blue Actually, they all look nice on me I think. The white company one's definitely fit the best though.

Haven't bought the hideous one :o

Was just rather unsure if jersey dresses were an instant frump maker. :o

I love em. The White Company dresses are excellent, and Topshop and (v occasionally Gap) for skirts.

The fit and flare one is pretty much the cut I have , although mine have no pockets. I'd quite like it for my graduation dress for Oct and am hoping it goes in the sales :)

Yes, the maxi with weird stuff across the stomach is horrible - can't see it being at all flattering. I'm short and have one WC maxi, which is fine.

These are really good in midi and maxi lengths but probably a bit thick for if it's ever really warm

NorthernLurker · 26/05/2013 12:01

The weird stuff can apparently be adjusted to hide according to your shape - I think that means there will be loads of it and unless you've a very long body you'll end up looking wrapped in the middle Hmm I'm 5 ft 3 and the WC maxi would definately be too much for me Grin but then I'm very round as well Grin

I'm 5' 2 and some WC maxis work and some don't, mostly to do with norkage rather than length. Am size 12 but mainly a small in WC.

And the model in the weird dress is probably around 8 feet tall and as wide as a twig, and it still looks awful!

I love jersey dresses. Can be dressed up or down depending on accessories and shoes. I'm wearing one today and went for a walk this morning with converse and denim jacket. Will dress it up later to go out with heels and cardi or different jacket. Some of mine don't even need ironed, bonus! I also have my eye on some me&em ones to go on sale. I got the drawstring pocket jersey me&em one on sale though and hsve to say I'm a little disappointed with the quality. it has gone bobbly after only 2 wears. anyone else find this? I'm glad I only paid £45 for it and not £150!! Really expected more from me&em.

Oh and I have a Westwood one which can take me anywhere from a summer barbecue with sandals to a nightclub to a posh party. Worth every penny.

Remus, my me&em is like that...casual with drawstring , wear flipflops. For smarter occasions I wear a wide obi belt to hide the drawstring and just add heelsSmile Your VW sounds lovely. Envy

Which dress do you have Remus? I need something with sleeves and in a colour that won't clash with dark blue robes and lighter b,ue and gold hood

I LOVE that ruched maxi dress!

Remus are your topshop skirts all the viscose ones or cotton? Am a bit wary of viscose skirts...

Me&Em dresses are fab, the Ruched ones really suit my shape. Think I will get the maxi!

The double layer Topshop ones are viscose, but then so are most of the WC dresses too.

When does the Me+Em sale usually start? Have my eye on the Body con3/4 shift dress.....but £128!

I have the me +em ruched maxi -the hideous one Grin - and it is gorgeous. I guess it depends on your shape but I find it really flattering for my shape (i take the large size 12-14). The ruched bit is perfect for disguising my post baby belly. The material is thick and lovely and soft...in fact I'm tempted to order some more me+ em I'm so impressed!
Not sure about the white company ones....I like the style but I have been really disappointed with their dresses in the past.

I also love that me and em one "the hideous one", however at 5'3" it would look crap on me!
