Faded/ripped/distressed jeans - age limits?

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/05/2013 19:22

Now I know we hate being told we're too old for something, but at 40 am I too old for ripped jeans?

I really love them, especially the ultra faded ones but but but. I fear my knees are not what they were.

So perhaps I should just go for some very faded/pale blue ones? I am short so don't do boyfriend styles but has anyone got any skinnies/slim fit in that colour that they love and would recommend?

Thanks!

I am 40 too and I think I am too old for ripped jeans. I have seen them on women the same age and they just don't look right to me. I'm not sure why. I like faded but I think ripped is just a step too far.

Nehru · 03/05/2013 19:25

They're a bit 90s aren't they

Juniperdewdropofbrandy · 03/05/2013 19:26

If you have the figure for it why not? 40s young. And if the rest of your style is youthful then that's a bonus.

Your knees won't be fully out anyway will they?

I wouldn't wear ripped but that's because it's not my thing. I wear slim fitting though and dam 44. But I do look younger, early 30s.

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/05/2013 19:26

I think you're right Dexter and you know, DH would kill himself laughing at me Hmm

So any really faded ones anywhere that are flattering? Bizarrely I tend to find them less flattering than pure white.

Am* not dam.

hedgefund · 03/05/2013 19:26

zara have lots of faded jeans in atm, some with just a hint of distress Wink

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/05/2013 19:27

I'm more classic really so they'd be out of my comfort zone.

90's - hmm, well I want white stilettos and they is well 80's.

I think I need to go to Zara and try loads on. I used to have a great faded pair from Zara but put on weight and gave them away in temper [fool]

I think anything goes nowadays. As long as you wear it with confidence Smile

notyummy · 03/05/2013 19:33

I think they stray slightly into the Patsy and Edina territory if you are old enough to have worn them the first time around. And that's not a blanket rule about everything that comes back in fashion- just specifically ripped jeans. Saw a pic of Elle Macpherson in them the other day and frankly she wasn't making them work.

dexter73 · 03/05/2013 19:33

Just been thinking why I'm not keen on them. I think they look like you are trying a bit too hard to be trendy. They are out of my comfort zone too - I would want to mend the holes!

Fuckitthatlldo · 03/05/2013 19:33

To hell with it woman - wear what you like!

Just don't wear them with a fleece Grin Grin Grin

Hassled · 03/05/2013 19:34

I think you're too old. I think 30 is probably the threshold. Sorry.

Booyhoo · 03/05/2013 19:37

faded/ripped/distressed jeans should not be worn after 1997 Wink

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/05/2013 19:39

Patsy and Edina [splutters]

OK well I may give way on ripped but faded or slightly distressed is ok I reckon - otherwise you're only left with indigo or stonewash and I'm not doing the latter.

I think it just looks too 'try hard' post 40, much as I love them Sad

too Judy Murray, eek!...makes me cringe

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/05/2013 19:41

What as in Andy Murray's mum - is she wearing ripped bleached jeans? Shock

OP posts:
cardoon · 03/05/2013 20:03

Yup -with holes Shock

maybemyrtle · 03/05/2013 20:11

I've just bought these. I'm 36, wore ripped jeans first time round, and quite like them on me Grin

Back2Two · 03/05/2013 20:19

I'm 43 and loving wearing faded 501s. They are ripped at the knee...because they're second hand, I fell over and they ripped!

I wore 501s 23 years ago or something, and I absolutely feel totally comfortable in them now. They look good. I love them.

teta · 03/05/2013 20:21

I've worn them well into my 40's.For goodness sake lets not not have another mumsnet moratorium about whats suitable past a certain age.Anything goes!

dexter73 · 03/05/2013 20:32

For lots of people anything goes but for me there are definitely clothes that I find too young for myself. If you are comfortable wearing what you wear that is great but if you feel uncomfortable wearing something for whatever reason then it is best that you give it a miss.

maybemyrtle - I love those, they're gorgeous, but have never bought from Gap before. What are they like size wise? Are they pretty loyal to standard sizes? I'm a 12 but in New Look I'm a 14, for example; don't have a Gap near me so will have to order online and would rather not have to send them back if they're cut larger/smaller than average IYSWIM

freddiefrog · 03/05/2013 20:49

I have a pair of very faded/light skinnies from Primark

Just their bog standard 7 quid jobbies and I quite like them

I've also got a pair of ripped boyfriend jeans, they're not too ripped, pretty much the same amount of rippage and the same colour as the ones linked above, I'm not keen on them if there is a lot of ripping going on.

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/05/2013 20:58

The gap ones look nice but I tried those last year and found the sizing very generous. But being short, I find boyfriends hard to pull off. Also my legs are better than my middle so don't want to hide them.

But ooooh, ripped perhaps not too much for a 40 year old. Just accosted DH with this burning question and he reckons I should give it a go as its just clothes.

So am now going to look in new look who it appears are the best ethical retailer at the cheap end of the market.
