Can anyone suggest the best high SPF to wear under makeup on a daily basis? Two provisos... It must not "peel" when foundation is used atop and it mustn't make me look like the living dead so, no white cast and no "bits" needing to be picked off, throughout the course of the day.

It should be easy but.... Clarins SPF 40 is pink in the container then comes out white on the face, in the styleee of Glenn Close (Dangerous Liaisons). La Roche Posay peels. Clinique Super City Block 40 leaves again, that white caste. Cheaper brands, very greasy.

Recently, due to my hyperpigmentation issues, I've made some expensive mistakes.

Anyone?

I have no answer but am watching with interest as I also need a very high SPF for the face (body is usually covered!) as I am super pale and never tan, I only go bright red.

Iirc meroxyl and zinc are both active sunscreen ingredients that cause the white cast phenomenon. It's difficult to completely avoid it withouth using protective power - I've found tinted sunscreen is the best way around it.

I suffer from hyperpigmentation and to cover old hyperpigmentation I am using heavy duty concealer (Vichy Dermablend-type LRP product) under LRP tinted Anthelios (with nothing on top) and the end result is much better than most foundations I've tried. I like the satiny/glowy finish, but if it's too much, a bit of loose powder over my forehead, nose and chin will fix that.

Am super pale (cool-toned) and have problems finding matching foundations. I mix Anthelios tinted 50/50 with regular Anthelios to get the right shade. For the sake of research, I've also mixed a bit of Revlon Colorstay (Dry/Normal type, shade Ivory or one degree darker, Nude) with untinted Anthelios with a spatula in a tiny fountain sampling jar and the end result is a cool-toned pale tinted moisturizer that stays stable for a couple of days and does not oxidize orange on my face and has not caused my sun-sensitive face to burn. Will probably start doing that when my tinted Anthelios runs out as the color match is better.

With these mixtures my hyperpigmentation has continued to fade even though I'm daily exposed to very strong Mediterranean sun. Earlier solutions - SPF15 type daily sunscreen-moisturizers- were not effective enough.

Layering different moisturizers and foundations is tricky stuff - pilling is quite common, as those products often have different bases (think oil on water) - so if you can find an all-in-one product, it will be much easier. The standard answer to address pilling is waiting between layers, but it's not very easy in practice.

I use creme de la mer which is SPF 30 it is lovely under makeup. It is very pricy but I have severe skin problems and it is the only thin I've found that doesn't irritate it

I swear by Darphin's Factor 50 moisturiser. Doesn't make me white, and my make-up behaves itself on top. Here

Thanks all. Frugal I gues it could be the mix of different things I'm applying. The peeling skin-look is worse than the white caste as my eyesight isn't what it was. I miss bits and walk around all day til some kind person tells me, I'm peeling. Nice.

Novelsituation the Darphin one is dear but then, considering what I've shelled out so far! I'll see if I can get a sample to try-before-buy. Aso, the Nars one reads well. Smile

Neutrogena Dry-Touch something something. Rubs in completely, not-sticky, leaves no trace.

I use MAC spf 50 prep and prime. It's a great make up primer as well as being a sunscreen.

Chanel UV Essentiel SPF50. Brilliant stuff. It's kind of a milky colour in the tube but dries clear. It isn't rich or sticky but not drying either, iyswim. Perfect under foundation.

Try Japanese sunscreens via amazon or ebay. I'm not sure if it's still available, but I used to use Sofina Lucent. All the JP sunscreens I have tried were invisible on, lightweight and fluid (silicone base), but drying so you must moisturise well. Finding a decent sunscreen is a nightmare - good luck.

I'm using this in SPF 30, I can't find the 50 anywhere.

With powder I am shine free all day.

Wee bit of a hijack but......are there any disadvantages to mixing your SPF with your moisturiser ? I'm currently using Clinique City Block and Neutrogena Oil Free moisturiser (orange tube) but tend to mix a blob of each together to save me time in the morning....Then I do my primer and then make up ....(God, reading that back I put a lot of sh*t on my face !)

Let me know what you think Eliza! I think it's great (and so is the price :) )

I like La Roche Posay Anthelios XL 50+ tinted fluid. (Not the plain, non- tinted version, which leaves an awful white cast.) You can get it in bigger branches of Boots.

Just to say, my Sunsense 50+ arrived yesterday, from Amazon. Worse it today and its lovely! No greasiness and no peeling when I put my foundation on.

Feel protected and look good with it in! Actually, although 50 I have good skin and could get away with just this, no foundation as it kind of gives a nice, natural finish on its own!

Thanks so much for the recommendation Smile
