I have decided to treat myself to a new handbag but have no idea which brands are good or not!
Is Radley a good make? I quite like the little doggy on them!

I borrowed a Radley bag from my Mum which I really liked which is why I am drawn to them probably.

gallifrey Sun 31-Mar-13 19:48:21

I just want a nice pretty bag that will fit my purse/phone/keys/lipstick etc in. I have had a change bag for the last couple of years but as soon as dd is toilet trained I have promised myself a really nice handbag, not a Tesco/Asda/Primark job like I've had in the past either!
I would like to have a shoulder strap so I can put over my shoulder and I like pretty colours pinks, blues, purples etc.

Budget around £100 if possible don't mind going a bit over smile

DontmindifIdo Sun 31-Mar-13 18:45:42

what's your budget and what do you need from a bag/style? Do you want something that's a style you have to hold in you hand/on your elbow or do you want somehting that will go over your shoulder/sit in your armpit style, or something with a cross body strap leaving you completely hands free?

Do you need something small or something that's say, big enough to fit an A4 file in (if you'll use it for work and might need to cart papers to/from, that's useful to avoid having to take two bags).

Do you want something smart/city/work friendly or something relaxed in style? Preference on colour? Do you have specifics like "must have pocket on outside for my bus/train card and keys" ?

Let us know, we will find it. (there are no right and wrong answers)

Radley bags have never let me down unlike other more expensive bags I could name. The dog doesn't bother me in the slightest. I buy the bags because they are great quality, well made, well designed. I have several and they all still look great. You'll never go back smile

MrsPresley Sun 31-Mar-13 18:29:05

I love Radley bags, very good quality and last for years, if you look after them.

I have about 23 of them and some matching purses, various colours and sizes, not all them have the doggy tag but you could always take it off if you dont like it.

Aquelven Sun 31-Mar-13 18:20:10

Radley bags are really well made out of good quality leather. Ones I have had lasted ages without looking scruffy or costing £800+ like certain other bags that tend to be drooled over.

Are you near a Boundary Mill? They sell them much cheaper.
If you like Radley you'll probably like Tula or Hidedesign too, similar quality & price.

The dogs are naff ?? Well I have several Scotties, the living breathing ones, & don't consider them naff angry

noviceoftheday Sun 31-Mar-13 17:36:57

Gallifrey, if you like the dog tags, keep them. Screw what a couple of bitchy strangers think. I don't have Radleys but I do have an Ill tutti mia changing bag which has a dog tag. Those bags are seen as cool because some A list slebs have it. hmm The dog tag doesn't define me but then neither do any of my other bags.

Euphemia Sun 31-Mar-13 17:16:16

I used to like the wee doggies, but I was forever getting them caught in things and breaking their collars!

Nice quality bags, though.

OrchidLass Sun 31-Mar-13 17:15:01

OP if you like the Radley dog then it doesn't matter if other people think it's naff or not. I find lots of things naff that I'm sure some people on here love. Acne Pistols for one but lots of people bow at the alter of the Pistols! grin

fedupofnamechanging Sun 31-Mar-13 17:07:48

I have a cross body bag from Radley - it is really well made, much better than the Fossil bag I have which was a similar price (the zip broke on my Fossil one and the leather on the strap seems to have the colour coming off in places).

People are snotty about Radley, because i think in the past the designs have been seen as 'mumsy', but recently I think they've had some quite nice designs. Certainly they are no worse than a lot of other brands, which are deemed more 'acceptable' on MN.

Must admit that I think the dog is horrid (mine came with a little metal one on a piece of leather, which I took off asap and gave to dd, aged 5 to play with), but that is just a question of personal taste. If you like it then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

www.radley.co.uk/grosvenor-medium-shoulder-bag-11855 better link and i think hog have some in sale

Allthingspretty Sun 31-Mar-13 16:50:35

The dog on radley bags is far less prominent on many of the newer bags. Radley also do a range for mary portas
[[ http://www.radley.co.uk/grosvenor-medium-shoulder-bag-11855 see no dog]]

bunnymother Sun 31-Mar-13 15:40:07

Mmm, I don't find the dog charming.

gallifrey Sun 31-Mar-13 15:35:08

see this why I need advice!
So the Radley dog thing is really naff then?

novelsituation Sun 31-Mar-13 14:55:12

Oushka have 20% off this weekend with the code "easter"

Would rcommend the Dover bag. They have it in a lovely eau de nil colour this Summer.

bunnymother Sun 31-Mar-13 14:00:54

Laura Bailey is the current face of Radley, and some of the bags she is photographed w in the ads look good. Obv ditch any doggy bits. I would look at Coccinelle, first. The store on Kings Road has a good range.

scarlet76 Sun 31-Mar-13 13:46:53

I have had Radley bags in the past and they wear well and have a good resale value on ebay. Radley have really upped their game in terms of design and not a dog to be seen!
Go to John Lewis and have a look. Modalau, Hobbs and Fossil are also stocked there and have some nice bags in for spring.
Report back what you buy.

AlwaysSleepingBeauty Sun 31-Mar-13 13:42:26

My mum likes Tula bags, they are in a similar vein to Radley in my mind so you may like those. I always buy vintage bags myself but I'm quite into having something nobody else I know has and often they are a real bargain.

I also like that nobody can ever tell if my bag was £500 or £5 ( I choose good quality vintage) but that's probably quite ridiculous blush

QueenCadbury Sun 31-Mar-13 13:05:16

I love radley as I find them really good quality. As others have said john Lewis have a good selection of radley and other bags. Peony and Moore have a good reputation on here although haven't bought anything from them. I have a couple of bags from monsoon that are good quality too.

pinkyponk67 Sun 31-Mar-13 12:28:43

John Lewis stock Radley and lots of other decent brands, go and have a browse and see what you like.

Allthingspretty Sun 31-Mar-13 11:38:20

I actually chose a radley purse over a mulberry coin purse. I chose it not jusr because of price but because the radley was more secure in teems of the zipper. Both were on sale

Allthingspretty Sun 31-Mar-13 11:35:09

One of the pippa styles was on sale on their websute last week.it eas quite tempting

Ediblemushrooms Sun 31-Mar-13 10:56:08

I have 2 Radley bags- just bought another- Bartley- but always remove the dog. I hate it.

There are very few Radley bags I love- maybe a couple each season.

You might like to look at Ochre Blue, Oushka, Modalu ( if you want a 'Pippa' bag), etc. Depends on your budget.

I go up to about £150.
